“Nothing to see.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

The grounds and statue are not maintained. When it was originally built I think it would have been worth seeing. Now its just a piece of trash, its a real shame.

“Great but unmaintained”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

The place was just okay. The statue was very unique and worth the hike. ^_^ Though it;s sad that they didn't maintain the park. There are alot of broken structures around the place and the man maid river doesn't have any water in it. Too bad

“The Center of a Wonderful Ocean Park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

The Maria Kanon Madonna of Peace Shrine, “The Madonna of Japan” is a rare miyagi rock sculpture of the Virgin Mary in an unusual buddhist style perspective created by the Japanese artist Shinichi Tani. The Madonna is very nice, however, it’s location is what makes it so special and provides you with a fun day in Tacloaban for free. The statue is in of a series of ocean parks in downtown Tacloban. The ocean parks start at the famous Sto. Nino Cathedral roundabout and extend to the historic Leyte Park Resort Hotel. Bring your camera and lots of friends, because there are hundreds of photo opportunities on this ocean park stroll. Heading north on Magsaysay from the roundabout, you arrive at the ocean front outdoor Balyuan amphitheatre with its experimental flower garden. There is an inexpensive outdoor barbecue at this part of the park every evening. Next you cross the street to the Phil-Japan Peace Park where you view the exquisite Madonna statue and the modern sculpture of the Crucified Christ high above. Now you walk north along Magsaysay to the Lion’s Den Club restaurant for a break, some cheap beers (P35) & good snack food with an ocean view. This is especially nice at sun set. Surrounding the Lion’s Den is the children’s park with all its concrete animal sculptures. Taking pictures on the animals is great fun for children and adults alike. Now continue on Magsaysay to the Leyte Park Hotel, passing the University of Philippines Tacloban campus. Have dinner next to their huge ocean view pool or at the wonderful Pier Tres Seafood restaurant located on a dock over the ocean. After dinner, finish up by listening to live music next to the ocean at Barko next door. Tired of walking, just take a multicab or tricycle on Magsaysay for P8 day or P20 at night.

I agree that the parks needs better maintenance and upkeep, just like the Intramuros in Manila need improvements.

Note: There is now a newly constructed secret garden at Barko for water sports and beach front dinning which could be another activity.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2011

The statue of the Madonna is pretty. Unfortunately the grounds around the statue are poorly maintained.
