“Fun Hostel for Families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

This is a youth hostel and not really a hotel. If you expect a hotel, you will be disappointed as the rooms are worn and heavy on the lino, there are no towels (although you can rent them), you have to make your own bed and there are children everywhere.

That said, we have kids and they loved the games, sports equipt, gardens and friendly atmosphere. This is a great place for staying within striking distance of Amsterdam but with kids who like to run around. It is strange that there is no public kitchen and that they discourage the eating of outside food (although they absolutely weren't patrolling for violators). There is a reasonably priced bar for adults to relax with a glass of wine in the courtyard between kicking the soccer ball and playing another round of hearts. :)

Room Tip: We stayed in the Adelbert, a good sized four bed 'tower' room with an excellent view.

The rooms were tidy, yet basic. Our rooms were located on the very top floor of the castle, which offered amazing ambiance and a nice view, but proved to be quite a trek for the retired grandparents who accompanied us on our trip. The breakfast was simple and sufficient. The staff was friendly. Easy drive to the ocean and to Haarlem.

From the one side you're going to live in the castle like the king and during approach this sense is increasing. Inside there are some traces of its former greatness - big windows, high room, view on the "king's garden"... But equipment of the hotel is very similar to those 200 years ago - only the needed things (hot water and WC are present for sure!). I think such kind of staying should be in my travel life, especially for such not big money.

Was here March 2013 with husband and 9 and 11 y.o. kids! So fun to stay in a castle even if just for 1 night. Great atmosphere! Love the concept of a family friendly hostel as it is sometimes hard to get a room for 4. Highly recommended for families.

We stayed only for one night in August 2012.
Nice and charming!
Doesn't happen to sleep in a castle!!!!
Great price as an hostel, booked by Internet without any problems.
Breakfast in the main hall is very good for a medieval taste and flavor.
Recommended.

Room Tip: Room in the castle!

Wow was this hostel beautfiul! Very clean entrance and rooms and friendly staff who were helpful with getting us information on getting to Amsterdam. There were 4 of us and we stayed in a 10 person room for the price of 4, I guess as a last minute deal. The room was of course huge as for it was ment for many more people. The decor in the rooms were very basic and minimal but that was fine, we were not planning on staying in the rooms all day. The breakfast spread was surprisingly extensive and included cold cuts, cheeses, pastries, yogurts, and cereals. The best part, you could pack a lunch. They had brown paper bags available and all 4 of us made sandwiches with a baggette, cold cuts, and cheese. We really enjoyed our stay here and what you got with your money was unbeatable. My husband and I would definitely stay here again.

Value for money considering now anybody can stay in a castle. I stayed in Kamer Irene which is a 6-bed mix dormitory with 2 toilet and 2 showers. I had a lovely time at the castle taking pictures of the 600-year old castle and its surroundings which has a beautiful garden. It was a bit tricky getting to the castle by public transport but once you are there it was worth it. I know now that you can get on bus from Beverwijk station to the castle or by ferry from Asterdam Central to pontplein and take a bus across the port straight to the castle bus stop at Jan Van Krugweg.

Room Tip: Kamer Irene on the 2nd Floor has a front view of the castle and a side view of the gardens tulips bl...
