“Relaxing, amazing sunset”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We are travelling with two young children (3 and 5 yrs old) and we really liked this place. Although we slept in a nice bungalow, the riverside location (great sunset view), the opportunity to rent kayaks and bikes, the vast spread out shady site which includes a little kids playground and a restaurant, we thought the place possessed a bit of the relaxing and informal feel of a good campsite! It is a short walk away from the town market and the beautiful and deserted beach (opposite directions). When crossing the bridge to go in town, we had an impressive view of the endless stream of dozens of big-enough-jellyfish passing below. On the way to the beach, we met plenty of nice and curious local people engaging us in conversation. Staff was also friendly and helpful.

We only had dinner here & left feeling underwhelmed and hungry and in need of a Big Mac & fries to passify our hunger (if we only ate the 5 star Scottish restaurants offerings in the 1st place):-)

We found it difficult to stomach when we had waited for over an hour for our food to be prepared to order. Disappointed that there was no crab, what the restaurant is recommended for, we chatted with the waiter/manager and decided to go for the 'large prawns' and the ginger beef with a pumpkin curry. No hoppers available as they take 4 hours to prepare.

We sat down to 12 shrimp sized prawns and a small pumpkin curry- which was good. When we asked about the ginger beef the waiter said he thought we meant ginger beer... not that that came our way either.

In all, the place has good potential but maybe we were in the wrong place at the wrong time!

I stayed for just one night in one of the new AC deluxe rooms. The room was clean, spacious and new with a good sized bathroom and a lovely patio area outside looking through the trees onto the lagoon. The sand was swept in the morning so was clean and free of leaves etc. and there are benches by the lagoon where you can sit and relax.

Food was good and the menu fairly extensive, especially for a small resort like this. Also the location was good and our driver had no problems in either finding the palace or getting to it.

Staff appeared to be a little unfriendly when we first arrived, but were friendly and full of smiles by the following day. It's a pity we could only stay one night - I would have like to have stayed a little longer.

I stayed one night at the Riviera, the location by the lake is very pretty and has a nice calm feeling. The rooms are clean, nice big bathroom and comfy bed. The dinner was amazing (best rice and curry I have had yet) - breakfast not so much. The staff are very friendly and helpful, would definitely come back if I return to Battlicaloa.

We went to this place after reading a good review in Rough Guide. It is a lovely guesthouse on a sprawling compound next to the picturesque, serene lagoon across from Batticaloa. The family that runs this place is so friendly and they really go out of their way to make sure all your needs are met. The place is one of the most efficiently-run guesthouses I’ve been to on my travels. The rooms and the grounds are spick and span, and everything has a very homey feel to it. We stayed in one of the fan rooms above the ground. It is meant for a single but the bed is reasonably wide. It was cute and cozy and a reasonable price. The food was also delicious. We ate a selection of curries, all good, as well as some of the best hoppers I’d had in Sri Lanka. It’s a short walk from the beach and about a 20-minute walk to town. You can also rent one of their kayaks and head up the river to the lighthouse. Definitely recommend this guesthouse.

Where do you start? The road (lane?) was closed, by rocks piled here and there. (We had to get out of the car and 'rearange' them, to get past). Our (reconfirmed in writing via travel agent) booking was 'lost'. (Fortunately, our driver/guide had a printed copy). So a room wasn't ready. The a/c didn't work until the maintenance crew attened to it. The bathroom facilities were abysmal. The water 'pressure' was well... The linen was 'found by the side of the road' quality. After a night's 'sleep' your back ached until lunchtime. That's if you made it to b'fast. Coconuts rained down all around you and the 'decoy' grounds' sweepers, who clearly realised the coconut pickers were at work, out of sight up the trees - without any warning signs. To get into town, allow half an hour to cross the one way Palady bridge - a new one is (finally) under construction alongside. (The Japanese construction team had walked off the job. Their replacement Chinese counterpart team appeared in the Riviera's dining area one night, but then they too inexplicably walked out suddenly, unserved). The last straw was the 'main man's' (owner's?) crude attempt to scam us with the bill when we were hecking out, in an obviously well practised routine. The details and obligatory accompanying 'invoices' were curiously withheld, in clear contrast to the many other hotels at which we had stayed. We were handed only the final inflated total figure. The meals and beverage services weren't too bad though considering...just don't look in the 'kitchen'. Our experienced driver/guide wouldn't eat there and consulted the above 'bridge' police who recommended a local restaurant across the bridge, near the river and bus station, well patronised by local business types. Spotlessly clean, great authentic local cuisine (this reviewer originally from 'Ceylon') with a name starting with 'Sri'(?) - shouldn't be too hard to relocate. Sooo inexpensive too. Does anyone know of any other quality accommodation in Batticaloa?

We had very small but sweet cabin, with a good bathroom. Price was good. Staff were friendly in response to us being friendly. We had been told by some Brits who had stayed in Batti for three weeks that this was the best place to stay, and we liked it too. For dinner we ventured out on the advice of a Sri Lanka friend to the Seven Star restaurant just down the main road, which was truly excellent and amazing value (we ate vegetarian kottu roti).
