“Simply Superb!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

For some reason the Samuel Fox has 2 sections on Tripadvisor, one listed under hotels and one under restaurants, we've done a revue under restaurants, so this is our take on the accommodation and breakfast. We stayed in a double room overlooking the front of the hotel with far reaching views. The facilities were far more than we expected, complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits, fresh fruit, chocolates, small decanter of sherry, the bathroom had complimentary toiletries too. The bedroom had a flat screen TV and was nicely decorated, the bed was very comfortable and the room was warm too. After a good nights sleep we were treated to a simply superb breakfast, of cereals, juice, coffee, tea and full English, with proper bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding, and lovely fresh eggs. A fantastic finale to our stay. We are so glad to have found the Samuel Fox, and wish the new owner every success. We can't wait to visit again and hope to do so in the next few weeks.

What a fantastic place! from the greeting to the unrushed approach to ordering to then the mind blowing food.

Forget all but the last review on the 16th October this is the place to rediscover your tastebuds.

If you have never heard of Hogget then start here - herb crusted and the most sublime lamb flavour I have ever tasted. My wife had rump steak and within a couple of bites was extoling it as the best meal ever.

Get to this inn before everyone else - which won't be long. We sat onthe next table to a famous politician and his friends and they seemed equally impressed.

Unpretentious though - just beautiful food!!!

My partner and i had dinner, bed and breakfast, here, last night. It was faultless. I've just read some of the other reviews but these are irrelevant as the Inn is now under new ownership, which i was told, occured in the last week.

The new owner is the chef and the chef can cook! He came into the restaurant later and was charming and engaging as was the waitress. His pedigree is impressive and it shows.... (A Roux scholorship, The Gavroche, The Square, A Ramsay restaurant, stints in Amsterdam and Sydney....) The menu was perfect in terms of variety (black bream, sirloin steak, steak and ale suet pud, shoulder of lamb0 but more importantly everything was cooked to perfection and his pedigree shows. Simple food, executed perfectly, using quality ingredients. Most places struggle with this and either send out bland food or try and show off and its all style over substance.

The room (no3) that i stayed in ,overlooked the carpark at the rear and was lovely.....tastefully decorated with nice touches. The rooms at the front have a fabulous view as does the restaurant.

We had a full english breakfast with toast and coffee. Again, even though simple, so many people get this wrong whereas here the toast was really good quality bread. The sausages were good quality. tiptree jam, good coffee beans. You get the drift.

My only criticism was the chairs that they have inherited in the restaurant. Just not that attractive (still comfy) but they said that they were going to change them in due course.

I have always enjoyed going to the Peak district, regularly, whether biking or walking and shall definitely be calling here again when i do.

Food was very poor - one meal inedible and got sent back and the rest nothing but average. Apologies offered for the inedible meal but no reduction in the bill. Very slow service despite there only be 8 people in the restaurant - one of our party had to wait so long the rest had nearly finished....and frankly it wasnt worth waiting for. Showers were cold. Wrote to complain to the manager and didnt even have the courtesy of a reply.

Although we only live 30 minutes from Bradwell, my husband and I felt the need of a night away from home. We arrived early afternoon and were shown to our room. Very pleasant smallish room-double bed was extremely comfortable and the the sherry and fruit bowl were very welcome (as were the thorntons chocolates!) The shower was hot and powerful. All spotlessly clean
Dinner was excellent. We ate far too much and enjoyed it all - the shoulder of lamb was particularly delicious and melted in your mouth. The waitress was very good and looked after us very well. We were on a DB&B rate and appreciated being able to have anything on the a la carte menu. There was another menu £15 for 3 courses on certain days.
Breakfast was equally good and we really enjoyed our stay. It was strange that there didn't seem to be any locals in the bar - which was a shame for the hotel
I booked directly with the hotel but then found a much better rate on laterooms.com. The hotel did match the price but with a certain degree of frostiness. However, when we arrived, all the staff were very friendly. Glad we had a room at the back because the traffic on the road would have kept us awake.

Room Tip: Room 4 at the back overlooking the car park - no road noise

Roms are comfortable but shower produced only cold water. Dinner was OK but for one inedible lamb steak. For high season the hotel was oddly quiet with very few locals using the bar.

With a little more effort it could have been excellent...

I was very surprised at the last review. I've not stayed at the Samuel Fox so cannot comment on the accomodation but I have eaten there on a few occasiuons and I've always found the food to be of a very high standard, more than deserving of its two AA rosettes.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Samuel Fox Country Inn is situated in the pretty village of Bradwell in the heart of the Hope Valley in Derbyshire's peak District National park and offers breathtaking views from the bar and restaurant. The building underwent a full refurbishment in July 2008 and is modern and stylish while still managaing to retain its rustic charm. All of its rooms are delux double rooms with en-suite bathrooms; they have at least 26 inch flat screen televisions;internet access and coffee and tea facilities. In October 2012 the Inn was acquired by new manager and head chef, James Duckett in his first pub venture after an early career in the kitchens of fine dining restaurants in the UK, France, Netherlands and Australia and, more recently running his own restaurants in Devon and Andalucia. James is passionate about food and uses, wherever possible, good locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to create mouthwatering dishes, for his 'blackboard' bar snacks and a la carte lunch and dinner menus alike. With two AA rosettes, fine food is a special feature of the Samuel Fox. However, there's also a very warm welcome awaiting those wishing to just enjoy a drink in comfortable and convivial surroundings. ... more   less
