Owner description: The Chestnut Centre is an escape from the bustle of life, in a secluded natural valley in the Peak National Park. The centre is home to 4 species of otters including the rare Giant Otter, 15 species of owl, tame fallow deer in the deer herd, foxes, pine marten and the elusive, endangered Scottish Wildcat etc. Truly a ‘Hidden Gem in a Hidden Valley”.

“Cracking afternoon out!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We went at 13:30 and spent the entire afternoon there. The food in the cafe was very good. I had soup and my wife had a jacket potato. The walk down to the otters and owls is very nice and the deer were very close to us. Close enough to touch. We watched the otters get fed and they were incredibly friendly with the keepers.

“A privilege to see these gorgeous animals!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

Otters are the most fascinating creatures and you shouldn't miss the opportunity to see them in these lovely surroundings. A good time to go is at feeding time (phone for times) when they are at their most active. A small herd of deer and owls, buzzards, pine martens, polecats, foxes, and Scottish wildcats further enhance your visit. Don't forget to pop into the coffee shop at the end! A wonderful day out and a beautiful walk.

“One of my favourite attractions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

This is one of my favourite places to visit in the area. Owls and otters make up the vast majority of the animals there, but there are also a few others. The animals have very large enclosures which appear to be well kept, you can often see otters swimming and playing in their outdoor area. The animals also have areas where they can rest and be away from view, so there may be some enclosures where you can't see anything, but personally I'd much prefer this to seeing animals kept in small cages with no private area as their welfare should come first. There are lots of enclosures anyway so there should always be plenty to see. There is also a small gift shop and tea room.

“Best avoided.”

Animals in captivity is all I can really say. Too many sad looking owls & otters. Expensive as well.

I am sorry you felt you had to write a disappointed review for The Chestnut Centre.
I am surprised at your comment about "animals in captivity" and wonder if you expected something different.
I can assure you our otters and owls are not sad and we care for each and everyone of them. Our keepers are dedicated and experienced people.

Fortunately, the vast majority of our visitors enjoy the time they spend with us and return frequently.
