My wife and I spent 18 days at the Kavos from 8 to 26 September, staying in Villa A. Since there are already numerous reviews of the Kavos and Naxos on Trip Advisor, I will limit my review to a few compliments and criticisms. First of all, Barbara the manager is perfect for her job, being very friendly and helpful. Many positive things have been written about her in other reviews and I can only echo them. Regarding the hotel itself, we found it to be somewhat overpriced (180 euros) and beginning to show its age. The complex was built in 1989 and is in need for a radical facelift. The doors and windows of our villa were sagging and one of the bedroom shutters couldn't close. Barbara did tell me that it is due for work this winter though. The living area of the villa and its garden were the best points and we enjoyed them both (our dog enjoyed rolling in the grass). On the negative side, the mattresses were uncomfortable. The bathroom was small and getting in and out of the tub/shower was difficult. There was no shower curtain, only a half glass, which didn't prevent spray from getting everywhere. Forget white fluffy towels - they were hard and a bit yellowed and didn't have the smell of cleanliness - maybe caused by the well-water? Bed linens were frequently yellowed and worn. In the kitchen, the refrigerator was one of those little old-fashioned ones with a non-defrosting freezer compartment, meaning every two or three days it was necessary to turn it off and defrost it otherwise the door would not close. It would have been nice to have a few hooks around to hang jackets, towels, etc. Outside, the garden was very pretty but small trash left under the bushes was never picked up. The two cleaning ladies who were very nice and competent, always showed up around three or four in the afternoon just when we had returned from the beach or lunch and would have enjoyed resting in peace. Noise from the exhaust fan from the restaurant kitchen could be heard from our villa, and the proximity of overhead high-tension cables passing close by was a little upsetting. We are not pool people so I cannot judge the hotel's pool. We preferred the Plaka beach which was about a ten minute drive away. The restaurant menu is aimed more for Americans and North Europeans so we did use it. The tavernas along the beaches and in town are plentiful and much more varied (and considerably cheaper).
This was our third visit to Naxos. I remember passing by the Kavos on the first visit in 1993 and recall it very new and a bit sterile. Now with the trees and plants grown it is very green and appears very nice from the road. The owners just need to make some improvements and I hope my comments are well taken.
