“Great Museum and Fantastic Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

This for us was one of the highlights during our visit to Mauritius. We visited straight after our rather disappointing visit to the Botanical Gardens and this really blew us away. The UK has some of the best museums in the world but this museum of sugar manufacturing is probably one of the best that I have ever visited. The tour outlines the production of sugar from the gathering of Sugar Cane to the numerous sugar products produced at the end of the process. At the end of the tour there is a very well stocked gift shop and a variety of Rums to taste which were delicious. Another highlight for us was the restaurant which we visited on 2 occasions during our holiday. The menu changes on a daily basis and the quality of the food is as good as I have had in any quality London restaurant. This is a must go place – you won’t be disappointed!!

“World class attraction, if only it weren’t so hot!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

Lots of interesting facts, well presented with model and pictures, and the original machinery from a working sugar mill. We learnt a lot, but it’s impossible to read everything in a single visit, so be selective.
The history of Mauritius is well covered and we learnt a lot that wasn’t explained on the Internet. We’re interested in old machinery, so found the exhibits from the mill fascinating. Sadly, as I’ll explain, we never saw the section on how the cane juice is processed into sugar.
Lunch in the restaurant was splendid, well cooked and excellent presentation. Probably the best meal of the trip, and most of our meals in Mauritius have been great.
The only problem we encountered, and the reason we’ve only given it 4 stars was the humidity and lack of air flow in the museum. We noticed in the morning it was unpleasantly stuffy in the museum. We cooled off during lunch. But when we went back after lunch, it was unbearable. It wasn’t that hot a day, but the high humidity made it intolerable to stay; we noted the only member of staff present was sitting by an open door! Within minutes of entering, we were covered in sweat. It was impossible to concentrate, and we had to leave. Annoying, we could have spent another hour there.
The problem wouldn’t be so bad in the winter, when it’s cooler. If you go during the hot season, try to get there early, and be prepared to leave by lunchtime. Also if you are feeling hot, avoid the exhibits on the upper floor, the heat is far worse there.
It’s a great shame. But don’t miss this great attraction, it’s probably the best tourist attraction we’ve visited.

· It’s a nice museum in an old mill with the old mill(not working). Everything in english/french. No guide necessary. If you read only the important things, then the tour takes 1-2 hours.
· The fee is 350,- pp. 9am – 5pm.
· nothing
