While wandering across Ireland this past month I stopped off in Donore for 3 nights and stayed at Daly's. The staff are lovely; extremely friendly and they serve a fantastic full-Irish as well! When I couldn't figure out how to turn on the lights, one of the bartenders came up and broke the process down for my befuddled American brain. I may have had a few or so pints in the hotel bar..the patrons were hilarious. Dalys was full of locals - it's one of two places to go in town.
While there I didn't have a car but I walked to the Battle of the Boyne, rode a rented bicycle to Drogheda and Newgrange and spent a Sunday drinking all day and watching an assortment of sports we don't get in the states, like Gaelic Football. But be careful of the barstools, if you get too excited you might tip over backwards to the amusement of the rest of your table.
The bathroom was immaculate, the bed was perfectly comfortable, I had a view of the stone church on the corner and the walk couldn't be beat - the chinese take-away was across the street, along with the Spar. It was a perfect wanderer's long-weekend in the Pale.
