“Romantic getaway in the Waterberg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

We loved the three nights we spent at Thula Meetse Mountain Lodge. It is a beautifully maintained self-catering resort (although they offer meals as well) consisting of just nine log houses for 2 to 6 persons, as well as conference facilities, quad biking and 4x4 trails, walking trails through the Bushveld, a large swimming pool, a putt putt course, and a good variety of game and bird species. The staff is wonderfully warm but non-intrusive, everything is very neat and tidy, and the scenery is gorgeous. Our log house for two had a double bed, a self-catering kitchen, a lovely bathroom with shower and Jacuzzi, as well as a shady patio, came with DSTV and air conditioning (as well as electric blankets for those nippy winter nights) and was cleaned daily. We tried out their restaurant on one night and loved the food, on the other nights we did our own braai in the large fire pit that comes with each log house. We also had one of the picnic baskets on offer, and found all sorts of tasty snacks inside. The beautiful gardens house not only a number of birds, but are visited by Sally the Ostrich, and a variety of antelope; we also heard some of the nearby baboon troops on the mountains, and saw the tracks of brown hyena, jackal, etc. The 18-hole putt putt course was fun but can do with an upgrade, but that is a minor glitch in an otherwise-superlative small resort.

Room Tip: Any log cabin is great as they are far apart and therefore private. There is one named the Bush Lodg...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Thula Meetse Mountain Lodge (meaning 'quiet water') is a well-established lodge situated in prime bushveldt only 33 kilometers from Mookgopong (Naboomspruit), 2 1/2 hours drive from Johannesburg and 1 1/2 hours from Pretoria. Nestled in the heart of the malaria free Waterberg mountain range and boasting the most amazing views and scenery from all corners of the property, this break-away jewel has all-year-round beauty. Summertime presents visitors with rushing streams and lush vegetation, while winter offers warm days and crisp evenings. The property has a diversity of topography incorporating plateau, mountain terrain, sheer cliffs, valleys, streams, grasslands; it also has a significant selection of indigenous trees. We are privileged to have a waterfall with a drop of approximately 19 meters. The waterfall flows most months in the year, and is most spectacular during high rainfall periods. Thula Meetse is the ideal place for a weekend getaway or a small private conference, bosberaad or product launch. A birders paradise with over 40 varieties of bird seen in the area. ... more   less
