“Important pre-Inca archeological site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

Fascinating site of Chachapoya burial of their leaders in about mid 15th century. Access can be a challenge for some, requiring walking down a moderately steep trail. A trekking pole might help. Horses are available for the return for 10 soles. Well worth the effort.

“Cool but too far away for real impact”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2014

The hike to the Sarcofages is actually quite steep downhill, and muddy (when we were there) so beware of that. It takes about half an hour, and then you arrive. We were a little disappointed that we couldn't get that close to them. But honestly without building giant scaffolding, I don't know how you could. They are set into a cliff face and really the only way to get there is to repel down from the top of the cliff.

Our guide gave us some interesting facts about the place, and there were some really vocal parrots in the area as well. Not the most amazing thing in the Chachapoyas area, but combined with Quiocta, a fun day of sightseeing.

“Bit of a walk but very rewarding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

This place is so unique. The walk was a bit steep on the way back, so make sure you wear good shoes, or wellington's. Really enjoyed this place.

“worth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2014

It is also worth to visit this place, in the middle of the mountain you will see this strange "tombs". The place is not so far from Chachapoyas and usually this tour is combine with the Caverna de Quiocta.

“They are worth the effort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

Your prize after a long and muddy walk is the view of several Sarcofagos that are hanging on a cliff. Bring your binoculars to appreciate them better.
