“What an amazing night! You must try this restaurant!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

We recently stayed in Campagnano di Roma for 2 weeks. We travelled extensively in the area including Rome itself, and can safely say that the best food we ate was in this delightful little restaurant in the town centre. (don’t be put off by the external appearance-the quaint exterior belies this homely friendly inn.) The owners (husband and wife) were immediately polite and helpful, and although he spoke very little English, she was a fluent English speaker, having spent time in a restaurant in Dublin. We chose to sit outside (me, my wife and 3 children) and almost immediately we were being given an explanation of each of the items on the menu. She took time to explain where the ingredients came from (vegetables from her own garden, local meats etc), and showed a real passion for her cooking. The menu is split up into 3 courses which we were delighted to try, but could easily have chosen just one or two. Typically they are priced between 8 and 12 Euros. We started with a shared platter of fried appetisers. These were simply divine-sweet peppers, cheeses, potato, carrot etc. We knew we had a great meal in store

Between us, we tried many of the items on the menu. I had easily the best pasta dish I have ever had in any restaurant-so simple but done so well-I can still taste it! I then had the “Oxtail Stew” which had been cooking for hours ready for the evening’s customers. All I can say is that I will never forget it. When it came to wine, we were given advice on what would go well with our food choices and it did not disappoint.

Don’t misunderstand-this is not some stuck-up posh expensive restaurant-just genuine home cooked delicious food with very generous portions and superb personal service.

And all the while, our hostess was back and forth checking whether we needed anything. The service was second to none, and when the bill came I was very pleasantly surprised-incredible value for money.

We tried other restaurants in Campagnano, but when we return next year this is the place where we will be spending our time. I cannot recommend it highly enough

“organic tradition”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2011

A small establishment right on the main street of this medieval village, situated a few miles north of Rome, "Iotto" focuses mainly on traditional recipes, making extensive use of local produce.
We visited on a friday night, and were seated outdoors, right on the street pavement where a handful of tables is clustered under some huge umbrellas. It was nice and cozy, given that the street is traffic free, although a few cars still passed by now and again, no big deal though.
Service was nicely quick, and in a matter of minutes we had placed our orders, out of a reasonably short menu. We shared a "fried appetizers" platter, recommended for two, then tried a couple of pasta dishes: tonnarelli with chicory and pecorino cheese, ravioli with mushrooms and meat, both of which were outstanding.
Pasta seemed home made, and the owner told us that all veggies come from the family's own garden, cultivated on strict organic standards. Good to know!
We finished with desserts, strictly home made as well, a peach tiramisu and a cannoli revisitation. Quite nice.
The establishment name, a local dialect term, means "delicious", but also "a person with strong appetite for good food".
Overall it was a refreshing dining experience, so if you happen to be in the area it's worth a try.
