“A King of Castles!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Visited on an afternoon of wintry showers and glorious sunshine. Stunning location and views of the surrounding coastline. Plenty of photo opportunities as you walk around the perimeter. Not a huge amount to explore inside and the information given is fairly minimal, but still good value for money. Some onsite catering would be of huge benefit and could probably raise some funds to maintain this attraction.

Hi Louisa. Thanks for coming to visit us and we're glad you had a good time. We do have a catering facility at the top from June to September when we are at our busiest. We can't do anything similar over the winter months as it's just not viable but we do sell snacks and drinks from the kiosk. We are limited to providing anything more inside the Castle mainly due to the fact we have no electricity but we do agree we need more interpretation, which is a project I will be working on this winter. Thanks again!

“Coastal Castle Treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Went recently for my umpteenth visit. This is a stunning castle set atop a mound of rock sticking out in the North Sea. Quite a steep decent to get to entrance at base of cliff, but the stairs are well spaced and a rail is there. Entry is £5 and you can buy some small items of refreshment inside. The castle is very large, and mostly ruins although a couple of areas are fully restored back to the 17th century, where the Scottish Crown Jewels were hidden. As the castle sits on an exposed cliff it can be quite windy, and some of the ground is uneven so some care is needed.
This place is a fascinating snapshot of Scottish Power during the 17th century and so worth a visit. Car park space available, and the town of Stonehaven is nearby.

“Can't be missed if you visit Scotland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

This castle is what I pictured of Scotland before visiting. It's a pretty magnificent sight when you approach it and might be a bit hard for some people to visit as there are a lot of pretty steep stairs. It's all worth it once you get inside. Very good history as you walk around inside. Beautiful views all around and great picture taking opportunities.

“Memorable experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

I'd love to see an artists impression of what Dunnottar castle would have looked like in its hey day. It is impressive. As we approached the castle we marvelled at how fit the film crew who made the recent film Macbeth at Dunnottar must have been to get their equipment there. It's a great fitness exercise! The views are breathtaking. We were lucky and the sun was shining, but it would be equally charming on a bleak day. It is well worth a visit.

“must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

The view is beautiful. We went on an over-cast day but it was worth seeing. There is a long walk to and from the location. The history of the castle life is interesting too. It was great to walk around the different rooms.
