“fantastic experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

A great place to see sea birds nesting. If you are lucky it could be a chance to see the cute Puffins.--Very noisy!!
A really nice walk along the cliffs.
You need stout shoes and a head for hights.
Not suitable for very young children

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2012

From late March to end of August the birds are nesting. Quite a selection to see and if you are lucky some puffins. Best time for them is in the evening when they return from fishing. Walk to the most northerly part of the reserve where there is now a very nice shelter. Walking along the cliffs can be a bit wiffy at times if there is no wind. Spectacular views. Not suitable for those with mobility issues. Only a few miles south from Stonehaven, sign posted Crawton, car park.

“Peaceful, serene and no one knows about it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2010

The cliff villages south of Aberdeen are enough to bring tourists. The town of Stonehaven - idyllic fishing village with a lively harbor; Old Portlethen - time stands still; Johnshaven - everything your mind can conjure up as an old Scottish fishing village.

But between Stonehaven and Catterline's Lighthouse, is Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve, part of the RSPB. Follow signs to Crawton, just past Dunnotter Castle on the Coast Road going south. There is no sign announcing the reserve, just go toward the sea and Crawton.

Walk the path which is about a mile long. The granite cliffs are the breeding home to many an important sea bird. The Fulmar, the Razorbill, the Kittiwake, the guillemot, and...yes...the Puffin. From May until August, this place is full of these species. May is nesting and breeding, June is hatching and by end of July, the place is empty. The 2nd week of May we went out and saw 14 puffins! And thousands and thousands of the others. The noise, the nature, the views!!!

Check the RSPB website; they often have walking guides for this unique experience.
