“Avoid hotel stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014 via mobile

The poor standard of accommodation does not merit the price of £75.00 per night.Pay a bit extra and stay down at the hotels at the harbour. We had a very small room with a sea view but the windows were screwed shut, literally!!!! Torn wallpaper covered with masking tape, 3 holes on the bath rim, unsecured toilet bowl, no telephone in room. Very poor standard of decor in the accommodation block. The only plus side was the food

I visit Stonehaven on a regular basis to visit friends and pop in to The Royal for breakfast but from now on I will take my business elsewhere. I ordered a simple breakfast of scrambled egg and beans on toast (beans on 2 eggs on 1) . What I got from the waitress was a plate of eggs, a stack of dry toast and a small pot of beans all on the side. Needless to say the table was just taken over by dishes and plates.
By the time I had sorted everything out my breakfast was cold, the waitress did apologise and said that the breakfast chef said that he didn't have time to sort out my order as he had hotel guests to look after. To me this was an absolute disgrace and they still charged me full price for my breakfast.
Needless to say I will go somewhere else for breakfast in the town and I also lay some blame on the hotel management for allowing such dreadful service to happen.

We have sampled the food several times on visiting Stonehaven and have never been disappointed, The food is always hot and well cooked, the staff are efficient and friendly and willing to advise. All items are reasonably priced and large portions. The bar is well stocked and functional. The bar and restaurant are clean and tidy but a bit dated. It is always our first port of call several times a year.

Visited with friends, maybe went the wrong day, no specials on offer and a number of items from the main menu were not available, also the draught ale was out of stock. Everyone in our party seemed to enjoy what was on offer, simple pub style food. The staff were attentive.

We had the 6 course dinner at the Royal before going to the simple minds concert in the square and the food and service was superb - they were so busy with people that night but the staff did an excellent job to deliver a high quality service. Would definitely go back and highly recommendable

Excellent value and Well done!

Booked a year in advance for Hogmonay at the Royal as a party of 14 and was impressed by the attention of the staff who could not have been more helpful. As the hotel was in the centre of the celebrations it was very busy the service was first class. The bedrooms were adequate and functional although a new carpet in the corridoor would help. Breakfast was very good with a good choice from the menu served with a smile. All in all we enjoyed our 3 nights stay on a very busy time of the year and hope to return in the future

Had an early dinner on a weeknight in this restaurant. There weren't that many tables available so we had to settle for a booth with a high chair on the end of the table, which was okay except for the fact that every time someone opened the front door a really cold draft came, chilling us all including our baby. However after we had asked them to do something about it they did try to fix it but couldn't in the end cause then people wouldn't get in and out..at least they tried.
The food was okay, nothing to complain about but nothing special. I asked for vegetarian fajitas which wasn't on the menu but they made it without any hassle. My partner had a burger which was good enough but nothing special. We ordered a children's pizza with baked beans for our baby but received pizza with chips. We asked the waiter for beans again but never got any in the end...we brought it up when he cleared the table and he apologised a lot and took the child's meal off the bill. So I guess even though the staff didn't seem the most competent they were very apologetic and took money off our bill.
So all in all it was decent and good enough just not great. However they could put more vegetarian options on the menu as they only had one (risotto).
