“Noisy and disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

In a central location and easy to find, the hotel itself is undergoing refurbishment and boy does it need it! The newly decorated room that I had was filled with cheap furnishings and was not very sound proof. As I was staying on a day let basis, after working a nightshift, I felt that I was in the middle of piccadilly circus, really inconsiderate, cleaner came into my room, surely they must have known that I was just in the door? I'm sure they don't get many day let's. Breakfast was poor quality and tasted pretty bad, I had the fried option. There was never anyone in reception so you have to go into the bar to get someone. I wouldn't stay again, I will see my employer and ask them to book me elsewhere next time. Although the room was ok, outside was a piggery.

Room Tip: Do not get a room overlooking the front of the hotel at the weekend, you will not get a good sleep...

The hotel is in the middle of town on the High Street and is approx. 10 mins walk from the harbour area. There is some free limited hotel parking on request, but if this is full, there is a "Pay and Display" directly opposite with reasonable charges. The hotel and some of the rooms were midway through renovations when we stayed, but this was not detrimental to our enjoyment. The rooms have comfortable beds and nice finishing touches such as bath essence / shower gels and a cafetiere. The shower cubicle is quite small but the power shower is wonderful. The quality and variety at breakfast was superb and the service provided by the lovely lady there was very welcoming.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly renovated rooms.

after booking this hotel as a birthday treat for my husband we got there to be taken upstairs with our bags and told to wait in the bar where we would be served with a drink, no drink was offered. then we were told the room was no longer available and we had been booked into the Belverdere which was a long walk uphill. No apology was given, infact the owner, who was standing at the end of the bar, sent her worker over to break the news. Incidently the Belverdere turned out to be a much nicer more friendly hotel but i doubt the dissapointing owner of the Royal will even print this review. a very bad way to treat guests. Carol Scott

Room Tip: don`t bother

Rooms and cleanliness would have been 5s had there been toilet brushes. Myself and 2 other friends each had booked rooms and none o them had a toilet brush. It would have been nice to have te option to clean own personal space.
Also worth mentioning the food is excellent.

Stayed in the room (#14) overlooking the beach. Great big window (& it opens up too so you can let in some fresh air or lean out to take photos). We were charged the normal double room rate although this was the 'suite' apparently so bigger in size etc & normally costs more. We did peek into the other rooms & they look the same just smaller. All newly renovated by the looks of things. Couch in room was a bit too cold to sit on (leather) but didn't bother us as we sat on the bed. Just dumped our clothes on the couch. Bathroom large - only problem in that room was the shower head. Wouldn't stay on the 'rack' so had to be hand-held which was a pain (& not what you want when you are cold). Heater in the room wasn't working but the lovely girl from the bar (as its above the pub) brought one to our room & it worked a treat. Tea & coffee in room with kettle. Free wireless internet. Staff were very nice. Breakfast was great (we are 2 vegetarians & had plenty to eat - cereals, fruit, toast, fried tomato & mushrooms etc). I liked the breakfast room as it seemed a bit old & traditional & you could look out on the street (had the Olympic torch passing through at the time). We arrived in the evening & as it is a pub, we could pick up the key from the bar so no need to worry about arriving late. Didn't hear any noise from downstairs even though it was busy as was a Saturday night. Would stay here again if in Stonehaven.

The quality and eventual helpful attitude of the breakfast staff saved this hotel from a lower rating, unfinished decorating in several places, and a dark dingy feel to the decor throughout.
The ongoing facelift needs immediately redoing to make it more welcoming.

Stayed here whilst on business for my company. As a lone female staying overnight I felt completely at ease in this hotel. Staff were friendly when approached. Room freshly updated and of good standard. Halls and further refurbishment throughout the hotel evident.

Room Tip: No tips. My room overlooked the back of the hotel so no view could be seen, but room was situated in...
