“Really enjoyed this traditional ryokan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

So welcoming! This is the first ryokan we've ever been to and the staff did everything to help us understand and enjoy our stay. It is a family inn and they take pride in the quality of the food and cleanliness of the establishment. A genuine Japanese experience!

If you ever have dreamed about a Japanese onsen (hot springs) inn in the mountains, this must come pretty close to your dreams.
Great room, great outdoor hot spring baths, and very good food.
It helps if you speak a bit of Japanese, but that is only fair, isn't it?

It's a bit of a hassle to get to - Shinkansen to Mishima, Izuhakone train to Shuzenji, local bus to Yugashima, and then you need to arrange to be picked up by their shuttle van. The trip perhaps took a little bit more than 2 hours from Tokyo. But it's well worth the effort and we enjoyed the bus ride through the countryside.

The ryokan is quite historic looking and very tastefully decorated with wooden furniture and traditional fabric all around. The lady who served us spoke some English. We arrived quite late at 6pm and we were asked to have dinner at 7pm - that felt a little rushed. I guess their meal times are pretty strict?? Breakfast was at 8am. Both meals were served not in our room but in a separate dining area which was actually a spacious tatami mat room and quite nice. Meals were gorgeous and delicious, with local wasabi and aji fish dishes as well as the usual sashimi and meat.

We had booked the standard room for about 13,000 yen and it was right across from the outdoor baths. The room was spacious with tatami mat area, foyer area, bath and toilet - quite luxurious for a standard room in a ryokan.

Their famous baths are the stone bath and wood bath - small, limited view of the mountain, but still very nice and peaceful. They also have the big indoor baths with views but we ended up sticking with the stone and wood baths. They offer private family bath in cedar tub for 3000+ yen but that felt over priced and we didn't take it. There is a ping pong room which is free.

Overall, Shirakabeso is a very nice and comfortable establishment. Even though the private area is cozy, the ryokan itself is quite a maze-like sprawling structure and I wish we were given a tour or a more detailed introduction in the beginning. My husband even found a swimming pool just before we left, and I think there is a garden there we didn't get to see.

The service is adequate. Everyone is perfectly nice and gracious and all, but a little business-like. They don't go out of their way to accommodate you. I felt it was strange that they don't mention shuttle van service without being asked, but if you are going by public transport you should definitely ask for pick-up and drop-off at the bus stop. The distance is not long but the roads are quite tricky and we would have never found it by foot. Amazingly, it was the local bus driver, as we were getting off the bus, who insisted that he call the ryokan on behalf of us to arrange for pick-up and we are grateful that he did!

I am marking the Cleanliness quite low because we found a huge hairy spider on the wall as we were leaving. Dust and dirt-wise it was spotless.
