“Mixed bag really, could be so much better with some love...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Was hesitant to award it 3 stars, as due to atmosphere i still liked it and it probably deserved 3 1/2 star but giving it 4 with all the negatives would probably be not correct.

Good points:
1) Service from reception upon arrival was great
2) Service from general staff nice, friendly, not always professional.
3) Room and view nice overall, yet some design faults (see below)
4) Lobby design
5) weather - just loved to get a bit of fresh air
6) beds were good, quite hard, which I personally like (no pillow menu though).

Negative points:
1) Maintenance issues: in the room (paint) and in general as well, need some good run thru maintenance overall. Also in general cleaning issues.
2) Room sink: very low and not convenient at all to clean or shave yourself.
3) the water mixer at sink and shower is difficult to regulate (you can't seem to get low pressure and warm water, only cold with low pressure)
4) few things inside the room did not match the MGallery image in my view (plastic signs for different things in room)
5) The building with elevator going to breakfast - oh good, why can't anybody see that this looks like a parking lot area, not a guest area and it would take just a bit of Gibson board paint and a bit of decor with some plants and paintings and voila...it is presentable.
6) Breakfast - pretty standard, but did not change a bit in 3 days, bread of poor quality, overall rather soso. Nothing special from North or specially for Thai people (who seemed to be some of the main targets).
7) around pool: sunbeds (very few) and nearly all looked very dated and not clean. Same goes for the big breakfast Gazebos - benches were dirty, etc.
8) Just felt that it needs some tender care and some creative ideas, to really market it in the right way. it is small enough to make it more interesting, more creative, more Northern, more boutique.
9) Overstaffed: this might sound silly as a negative: but at breakfast i counted every day around 7-8 waiters and at least 5-6 cooks. problem with this was that all of them not really knew their area (was asked 3 times if i want more coffee). Cooks are there, but not really look if food runs out (which it did a couple of times). With only so few rooms, i felt it should have been better if there were fewer staff, but know what is their job.
10) The light thru the dressing area: we needed to close one of the sliding doors to darken the room, which isn't much of an issue, but at night you don't want to bump into that door going to the restroom....so, just slightly annoying.
11) Ordered pick up from the airport and driver was there on time (not the best dressed person to make first impression). They used a mini van to pick us up (not a limousine) and it smell pretty strong of Northern food. Not a biggie....
12) towels: old looking, greyish instead of white....

Again, i believe it could be a great place, which could attract guests which want more nature, but it would need to go and be more creative how to incorporate the nature and ideas to make it a boutique resort.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

My daughter made arrangements to stay here. I had not looked at their website or had any idea what to expect. When we arrived and went to the "lobby" to check in, I was blown away. Just have a look at their website. The rooms are beautifully designed and very romantic. Our stay included a buffet breakfast at the High room which overlooks the infinity pool and the valley below the hotel.
If you intend to just stay at the hotel and enjoy it's amenities, you could not do worse. The staff is very friendly, however, service could be a bit better. I chalk it up to the language barrier and poor training. For example, we had dinner at the hotel restaurant. We walked in and around looking for a place to be seated and was ignored by the staff. Once seated, we had a very friendly waiter tell us about the food and was served, but that's it. You had to work at getting some attention. At the High room for breakfast, don't expect your coffee refilled automatically. Again, I don't think it was the staff's fault. More the management for not training them well for international customers.Keep in mind that the hotel is 30 minutes away from town and is services by their own shuttle bus.
Another possible issue is the location of a local karaoke bar (not affiliated with the hotel) that can get quite noisy very late into the night. Not an issue if you close your patio doors.

Room Tip: Try to get the rooms that face the restaurant on a higher floor. The view is very nice.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

We stayed in two deluxe rooms from December 26th - December 29th, 2012. The hotel is visually stunning especially at night, but shows signs of need maintenance during the day. A good pressure wash and some painting is much needed for building exteriors and fountain areas.

Our room was lovely and accommodated 2 adults and 2 small children (on the sofa bed). The surroundings are breathtaking and the grounds merit a walk to appreciate them. It is a tranquil place.

The restaurant for breakfast has a lovely view over the valley. The pool is visually stunning but small considering the number of guests that the hotel can accommodate.

The food quality was good in both restaurants, but the service was shaky in the one where breakfast was served. The coffee pots looked really shabby for a hotel of this caliber and the bar area of the dinner restaurant was a mess (exposed cords and strange hot beverage server on a plastic crate behind the bar). The pool area needs to be maintained regularly throughout the day to remove towels from people who have left. Just a few indicators that the service was a bit off... In their defense, everyone was ALWAYS smiling.

Be careful when booking tours and taxis through the hotel. Use the airport taxis which offer fixed rates of 450 baht to get to the hotel as the hotel charges 1200 baht for airport pickup. In this way, you also meet a driver that you can utilize for your stay. It is about 1 hour to many of the tourist sites which are on the opposite side of the city (Tiger and Elephant camps, zip lining). We spent 1000 baht per day to use the driver for 8 hours. Front desk personnel were interested in booking tours only and were not able (willing?) to provide general information about the area.

We had the most incredible family time in this magical hotel.
The hotel is beautifully designed, peaceful. Plenty of space, dialog with the nature, great service.
Just perfect.
The open air restaurant is good and the atmosphere really nice.
Buffet breakfast with magnifique view over the valley (and swimming pool)
There is every evening a shuttle to the center of Chiang Mai
We really loved it and will come back again.

We spent 3 nights in this exquisite Resort. If you are looking for PEACE and TRANQUILITY, this is the PLACE. Set in wonderful location....surrounded by tropical gardens, pools, in a ZEN atmosphere. The infinity pool is magnificent, but we spent most of the time in the private small pool with whirlpool of the Pavilion.
If I can just give a suggestion to the Manager , I will add a few more shuttles to downtown Chiang Mai : just one shuttle in the morning and one in the evening are not enough for a Resort of this high standard.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

We took our 3 year old daughter to Veranda Chiang Mai from 30 December 2012 to 4 January 2013. This is the best time of year to be in north Thailand and in the hills away from the city centre, it was delightfully cool and comfortable. If one wanted city life, this is not the place, but we wanted a getaway in the hills and it was perfect. A mere 15-25 minutes from the airport depending on traffic, we were greeted by a stand alone reception pavilion fronted by restful ponds and fountains. Reception was cheerful and welcoming and we were particularly impressed by Mr Apichai who, when asked to change our room due to a less favourable view (of a wall, albeit an ancient city wall), apologised that they were full in that class of room, but then upgraded us for 2 nights to a one bedroom suite until a nice room in the class we booked became available. That was stellar hospitality indeed.

The breakfast was served in the Higher Room restaurant by the pool, an extensive buffet of western and Thai food, with three live stations for eggs, waffles and a constantly changing delicacy such as noodle soup, Pad Thai or local satay. As we had brunch every morning, we seldom needed lunch. The dinner restaurant Rabiang Cha is a quaint collection of stilted cottages with dining rooms within, or at their feet, next to lush gardens and padi fields within the estate. The food was uniformly superb and reasonably priced. While the efficiency of the F & B service was a bit choppy sometimes with long delays between courses, or one time at the poolside losing our order for over an hour due to miscommunication, it was more than made up for by the sheer enthusiasm of the staff to please and to try to make our stay memorable. The F & B manager and deputy, Mr Nok and Mr Tai, both were particularly friendly, personable and attentive to our every wish. For example, we were late booking our new year gala dinner places and we were to be seated indoors, but Mr Tai wrangled us an excellent place al fresco by the pool, in a perfect location. It was magical being under the stars and floating Chiang Mai lanterns, with live music and a spread that could only be described as epic! We congratulated the chef when we met him.

A word must be said of the enormous infinity pool overlooking the surrounding hills. It has a large paddle portion for small kids and stone recliners in the water. The view from the pool deck is amazing, especially in the colourful sunsets.

I did a cooking class one afternoon and instead of eating the food at once, we asked that it be kept for our dinner at Rabiang Cha and Mr Nok immediately saw to that. Then later, at dinner when our daughter started falling asleep at the table and had to be brought to bed, the staff readily converted our entire dinner to room service so that we could stay with her and still have dinner.

Veranda is about an hour to the nearest elephant camp and 15 minutes to the night safari, the only two places we ventured out to for our daughter's entertainment. The tours offered by the hotel were a bit limited and needed minimum numbers, but the concierge was happy to connect us with their tour provider directly, so that we could make arrangements with him.

The kids' club was a large space with all manner of child entertainments. The staff Ms "E" and Mr Wit were wonderful in minding our daughter together with other kids, so that my wife could go to the spa and I could run around the estate (in the noonday sun, it was so comfortable outdoors!) and use the gym. The spa treatments were very good as well.

Physically, the modern room we had was very cleverly designed with large sliding partitions that opened up the bathroom entirely, partially separated it, or fully enclosed it depending on how we moved the partitions. This allowed views from the bathtub and shower in the day, and shielded the room from bathroom light at night while our daughter slept in the cot they provided, with pillow, bolster and duvet as well. The balcony was very welcome and a delight to sit in at night to take in the perfectly chill night air.

Overall, the Veranda is near perfect. The slight misses were not significant and easily forgiven when the attitude and quality of service is viewed in totality. There were a tad too many stairs in places and our room was a walk up. The beds were large wooden platforms that jutted beyond the mattress, such that it was easy to catch a foot on a sharp corner walking past. But these were small things and did not detract from a very enjoyable stay. We will certainly come back.

Room Tip: The best views for the deluxe rooms are from the block facing west, on a high floor. It is a walk up...
