Having seen Luke demonstrate at Welsh Food shows since he was 12 and read so much about Luke's Dining Room, a group of us decided to make the epic trip from North Wales to Cookham Dean for lunch. Was it worth it? too right!
On arrival we were welcomed by Luke's team and greeted with cocktails and canapes in the rustic lounge with cosy log fire. The attention to detail - bon bons of cheese on a bed of intense fig jam, perfect smoked salmon cubes with horseradish cream, finished with micro herb, was an indication of the luncheon to follow comprising of an inspired range of dishes.
Soon after being invited to our table, a sack of steaming, freshly baked bread nestling in a small woven sack appeared, quickly followed by an amuse bouche of onion volute with contrasting crispy pancetta. Perfection in food was matched by perfection in presentation, using slate and small kilner jars, nostalgia was brought to the table.
We were then treated to lightly seared scallops with a curried mussel sauce. The accompanying mussel fritter was a delight, as was the perfectly diced mango. Our main course comprised of a fillet of beef - pink of course!! topped with dainty crispy onion rings, served on a swipe of artichoke puree. The finishing touch was a deeep fried sprig of thyme. The beef sauce was left in quaint copper pans, to allow us to add, according to our taste.
The medley of desserts followed - to share of course! A pot of chocolate mousse, as light as a feather, topped with finely chopped water melon. A jar of panacotta with an exquisite texture, was complemented by tangy compressed raspberries. Then appeared a magnificent bowl which had been coated with an aroma of its own. Inside was an amazing explosion of flavours and textures topped with popcorn - a play on Solero ice cream, we were told!
Throughout we recieved excellent attentive service and we appreciated the fact that Luke and his team appeared with every course, to explain the combination of ingredients, which gave us such an amazing gastronomic experience.
As we left, the sun shone, making the swimming pool and loungers with parasols look extremely inviting for a return visit in the summer! We are also excited by the thoughtof dining at Luke's new outlets as they open later in the year.
Diolch yn fawr iawn, Luke
