“Stayed on business”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Hotel is OK. Rooms are quite small. Wifi works but only 1 device at a time. Restaurant was quite good. Did not use exercise room due to odd hours of 6-10 PM, as I normally go in the mornings. Oddly enough could not find a bar when walking around Rauenberg. One is on site at the hotel, we just wanted some place different.

I stayed two nights in the hotel on a business trip. Beds (single room) are tiny (90 x 190cm) and not acceptale for taller people like myself - "You can buy an upgrade to a double room" is not an acceptable answer received at the reception either ...
The location is quite nice (for having a run or a walk) and staff unfriendliness (on first sight) can be explained with "rural charme".
Design / furniture in rooms (as well as carpets) are if at all just acceptable; rooms are not noice isolated and ear plugs were useful - bathrooms have been renovated and are clean and well functional (but pls. exchange the Shampoo). Restaurant food quality was good and WiFi Access is free.

I've stayed at the Winzerhof many times on business, but not anymore. This Hotel has had a captive local business with SAP and DuPont for many years and frankly has milked it. A few of the rooms (above the reception) are really excellent, but the vast majority have not been refurbished for many years and are very tired and scruffy.
The restaurant is pretty good, but the service is poor. They have several function rooms and if they have some kind of function during the evening then forget it if you're a resident.
The newly opened Villa Medici in Bad Schoenborn is close by and must be taking many customers from the Winzerhof. Also I would recommend the Scheffelhohe in Bruchsal or the Kreuzberghof in Tiefenbach.

I stayed at this hotel for 1 night enroute from the UK to Hungary. This hotel is in a residential area of Rauenberg. There's a busy restaurant and the car park was full meaning I had to park on the street as the underground garage was apparently closed. When I looked it was full of tables and hotel bits and pieces and not secure. The cost of the room was about £80 but I was stuck and had no choice. The wireless LAN is rather slow and extremely expensive and costs EUR 17 for the "business option" of unlimited downloads . I've stayed in equally good hotels in the middle of Frankfurt for £50 and this included a more comprehensive breakfast buffet and unlimited WLAN access. The furniture in my room was tired and old fashioned and the TV was really ancient. Most of the channels available were either in German or shopping channels (what's the chance of ringing a shopping channel to buy knock down price jewellery from a hotel in Germany?). Overall, this is an overpriced place handy only for the motorway to Heilbronn or Mannheim. If you can manage it, stay in Frankfurt, it's more fun and it's a lot cheaper.

  • Liked — near the motorway
  • Disliked — very expensive additional services

I stayed at the Winzerhof for a week while on a business trip to nearby Walldorf. On a previous visit, I stayed at the Marriott in downtown Heidelberg. Never again! Not that the Marriott isn't nice, but the Winzerhof has gotten it beat hands down.

For those with strictly American tastes, I will forewarn you that the beds are standard European fare - somewhat hard but comfortable. Beyond that, Winzerhof has any American hotel beat. My room had a balcony overflowing with flowers, where I could look out on vineyards beyond the red clay roofs of the town. The full German breakfast, including eggs cooked to order, was included in the price of the room. (Which was almost 100 Euros less than the Marriott, where breakfast is not included.)

The hotel has a fantastic restaurant as well as a special Chef's table. The menu features German specialties, but has a good variety of foods that would be familiar to anyone. I ate several fantastic meals at the outdoor restaurant patio and enjoyed the house wines, which come from the family's private vineyard. There is also a small bar and a wine tasting bar. I didn't visit the indoor pool, but had a colleague who swam there every morning.

Beyond the beautiful setting and fine food, the best part of the Winzerhof is the staff. They are extremely friendly and accomodating. Even if you don't speak German, you should get along just fine.

If you are trying to find the Winzerhof, you will need to follow the detour signs, as there has been construction going on in the village for some time. The way is well marked with both "Winzerhof" and "Umleitung" signs.

Note that the hotel is a very short drive from the SAP world headquarters in Walldorf. It books quickly, so be sure to reserve ahead.

  • Liked — Hospitality, food, ambiance
  • Disliked — European beds (which wouldn't bother everyone!)
