“Been there”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

For the last few years, I have visited this place several times a year and I never get bored of going there often. To begin with, travelling from Chengdu to Khangding by road has it's own advantage: there is a beautiful change of landscape as you go further and get nearer to Khangding Tibetan territory with bluer sky, taller mountains and lots grean and rivers. Taking flight from Chengdu to Khangding is another option which avoids travelling by road for 7 hours journey.
Fromg Khangding to Tagong takes about 2:30 hours drive on green pastures with small village houses, tents and lot of yaks on the way.
Tagong is a small town surrounded by Tibetan nomads and many buddhist monasteries situated near by. The best months to visit this place is from May to September.
Best would be to spend 3-5 days days here, during which you can visit nomadic families, monasteries, grassland or get closser to Yala mountain.
Tagong has both fare hotels and home-stay facilities, and Khampa Cafe is located just left side of the Tagong monasterie's gate.
Although, Tagong is a small township, it is a wellknown tourist attraction place.

“Beware of road work - Oct 2013”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

The main street running through town is under road work. When we arrived we thought it was a bomb site! Extremely dusty and dirty, accommodation is basic. It's one of the most memorable place I've been to in China. It could have been wild west America. Its beauty can be said better by pictures. I would love to revisit this town to catch it in a better condition.

“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

I love wide open spaces and if you like it too then you must visit the grassland anywhere within Western Sichuan. This is one of the few attractions in China where there is no crowd, except crowds of yaks!

“Great place, wonderful views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013 via mobile

Tagong is a very small and peaceful village.
You can hike 2.5 hours to an isolated monastery. From there you can go 5 min to the nunnery which is a very nice and highly recomended village near the monastery.
You can also hike to one of the hills around the village to get a magnificent view on the area!
Enjoy tagong!!

“Mountains, grassland and Tibetan people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

Yala snow mountain is still in the cloud hiding when I visited Tagong in May. Mt. Yala, or Mt. Mjera is one of the best views in Tagong. I remember the last couple of times I visited Tagong in summer, it was sunny, the mountain shapes like a lotus flower, soaring higher than the peaks around it. Tagong indicates the place that the Buddha likes the most, possibly because of its natural beauty including the grassland, yaks, mountains, and that resulted in a lot of monasteries built on the grassland.

There are a lot of things you can do in Tagong: try the western food at Khampa Cafe and find out day/half-day walking and horseback riding around this single-street town. Local accommodation became better than 2 years ago. Some of the guesthouses are quite clean. There are horsemen waiting outside of the Gold-top, a monastery five-minute north to the town, charging tourists 60-100 yuan for a horse riding. They have three different kinds of riding, the smallest loop takes about 15 minutes(or less) costs about 80 yuan. Do not enter the fenced area of the grassland near this monastery, you may get charged by the locals.

Tagong is also a good trekking terminal. I walked the trail from southeast of the mountain, which is near Kangding and went a loop around the mountain, camped at the back of Mt. Mjera, took an open hot spring in the valley and corssed a 4500+ meters' mountain pass and ended on the grassland. Excellent views but involes camping.

It is an at least one day stay hear in Tagong because there are just too many to see. I have been in Tagong in July, Ocotber and May. I think the time I visited in July is more beautiful when the land is greener. In October it was covered by snow when I visited. But it is all depends on the weather, do read weather forecast before you go.
