“Psyche-deli-cious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

If you ever find yourself in this tough-looking border town in Turkey's Far East--and you might whenever you are on way to Mt. Ararat, the palace of ishak Pasa, Van or Iran (!!) -- do stop by in this over-the-top restaurant, even if you are not hungry. You will find yourself in a psychedelic dream of garishly-colored naif murals, artificial stalactites, and plastic flowers. But this is not Vegas-on-a-budget. There is an touching exuberance about it all which will put a smile on your travel-worn face. The mural painter was obviously so pleased with his work that he painted his cell phone number in case you needed your home redone in the same way!

But of course the reason to stay is the food. They serve the standard regional staples like lahmacun and various kinds of kebabs, and, on an irregular basis, specials. I recommend the flatbread (pide), which is constantly coming out of the wood-fired oven in the form of a huge souffle--especially delicious with nigella seeds on top. Being a largish group, we ordered a sampler of everything available that day and loved it all. There was another largish group of Italian mountaineers who had just descended from Mt. Ararat enjoying the offerings in the "Oriental Section" (no chairs--you recline on local rugs and cushions) and seemed unwilling to leave the comfort of the restaurant.

The owner is very obliging and understands English well enough to make things work for foreign visitors.

And it is excellent value!
