“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014

After some small uphill roads via a local village, we arrived at the Rhotia Valley Tented lodge. Next to the beautiful view, friendly staff and amazingly good food, the tents were very comfortable (especially the beds were very good). Also the fact that all the profit that is being made is invested into the orphanage next door, makes the stay even more worthwhile.

What a beautiful location. The scenery was spectacular and the garden marvelous. Unfortunately we arrived at the end of the rainy season so we could not relax by the pool but enjoyed the deck none the less. Our vehicles definitely struggled with the mud and we were happy each time we made it up and down the mountain with out getting stuck. An adventure! Loved that the owners spent time with us and led us around their orphanage located over the next hill. Part of the proceeds from the lodge and their bakery support the orphanage. A noble and wonderful venture. I highly recommend staying at the lodge.

Room Tip: All rooms are separate tents with fabulous vistas.

Our first two nights on Tanzanian soil were spent here. It is a heck of a drive but well worth the effort. Occupying two hills, one for the camp and one for the orphanage and school the place could not be more more self sufficient nor friendly. Local produce covered the dining hall for dinner and breakfasts, the owners could not be more hospitable and the tended lodges catered for all our needs. A wonderful retreat and made all the more enjoyable knowing that profits are going to sustaining the local area.

How beautiful to be set over such stunning valley views, nestled into this beautiful Lodge that provides such a place of warm welcome and tranquillity.

The welcome from the gorgeous team at Rhotia was just lovely. It somehow felt like we had arrived to visit family! The thing is that this team find the perfect balance between making you feel welcome and leaving you to enjoy the space.

We only stayed here briefly while on our travels but it was the perfect place to come to, chill out and just feel such a state of relaxation at the end of long days. Our highlights were:

- Sitting on the decking at dusk with the hot coals burning enjoying a drink looking out over the changing colours of the valley as we enjoyed the afternoon little bites to eat
- Having a swim in the beautiful pool looking out over what felt like a painting! Amazing!
- The food! WOW! So delicious! They accommodated for me to be gluten free which was much appreciated and didn’t sacrifice on taste in any which way. They grow a lot of their own food in their amazing gardens and it shows in the flavours of their food. YUM YUM YUM!!
- The staff – so kind, welcoming and friendly
- Turn down service with hot water bottle!

The tents are just beautiful, cosy and clean. The deck from each one provides beautiful views. What a place to take it all in.

Highly recommend this place! We wish we had been there longer to have been able to visit the Children’s Home and the Bakery.

As we were greeted personally by Marisa as we arrived, it was immediately obvious that this was to be very different from other accommodation. The Tented Lodge supports the children's home and, it is clear that this is a passion for our hosts, who seem to enjoy meeting and chatting with their new guests - making us all feel just that, guests rather than just paying customers. We didn't have time to visit the children's home as this was a full on safari trip and we had only 2 nights at Rhotia Valley, ending each day hot and tired. The tented accommodation was extremely comfortable and the beds were especially warm, cosy (even more so with the added warmth of hot water bottles!) and gave us aboth a couple of really good nights' sleep. The food, both in the restaurant and the two packed lunches we had were delicious with some traditional Tanzanian dishes to enjoy.

Eight of us arrived here after a day at the crater. We were greeted by Evelyn and shown to our accommodation by Tedi. We were keen to see the children's home that is supported by the lodge and we were amazed at how well it was run. It has it's own spotlessly clean dairy as well as it's own bakery. The accommodation is very comfortable with great views over the valley. This lodge employs sixty two people and supports many happy children. The hosts were fantastic and helped solve a health problem for one of our tour guides. A truly great place.

We arrived cold and wet after a day in the crater, a fire in the lodge, gracious hosts George and Lisa, Evelyn, and staff were very nice, George gave us a tour of the children's home and school. Nice to know our patronage helps this worthy cause. The setting is beautiful, tents are very nice, zippers alittle tricky. Food is supurb. When you go make sure you take tour of the village with Emanuel. He is a walking encyclopedia of flower and fauna. Just wished we could have stayed longer.
