“Jungel without driving to far”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

We chose that lodge because of its closeness to Tena and because it seemed not to big and overcroweded. Both expectations have been perfectly met. (Stayed 3 nights/ 4 days)
Booking: The adress of its Quito office changed recently, its located in a Hotel called Villa Nancy now. The old adress (Av. Amazonas y Wilson) does not exist anymore.

Arrival: Takes about half an hour from Tena by taxi (10 Dollars), there is supposed to be a bus 5 times a day

Staff: Very friendly and caring. English is spoken on a high level.

Food/Drinks: Excellent three meals a day, actually the best food I ate in Ecuador. The cocktails are good as well (They have a happy hour)

Location: feels like your deep inside the jungle, the bungalows are spread out, so you have privacy, every hat has a porch which is facing the rio Napo. The room/bathroom was clean and comfy. Hot water the whole day.

Tours: Well organised, the staff tries to fulfill all wishes and request. The tours are organized for all guest of the lodge as a group.

I would like to go again any time!

On arrival staff were very friendly and eager to help. Luis got us off the bus and we were on our way to the lodge. They carried our bags down to our room which had an excellent view of the river. Rooms were very clean, big and the best part was having a lovely view from everywhere you looked. Food was very enjoyble, portions sizes perfect, presentation was wonderful and recommendations to the chef who went out of his way to meet the needs of my sister who is gluten intolerant. The tours were wonderful especially hiking to the waterfall and tubing down the river, although it would have been cooler to be able to choose your own activities.
All in all a great place to get a taster of how incredible the amazon jungle is.

imagine sitting on the blacony of your jungle loge with the Rio Napu - an Amazon Tributary flowing slowly pasy - the peace and tranquility is palpable, and when you add fun expeditions ( including floating down the river in a tyre and Mohammed's excellent cooking, what more could you want?
Monkeys play in the trees nearby the noise the frogs make is quite amazing , birds of all colours are easily visible from your veranda .....and travelling everywhere by dug out canoe is such fun

My one regret - that we were not there for longer (or even for ever!)

Room Tip: Overlooking the river is stunning

We visited Cotococha Lodge from 12-14 October. The rooms are all bunglow style, very clean and basic. Our double room had two comfortable double beds, spacious bathroom and faced the river. Our friend had a single room, two double beds and a smaller bathroom. There is no electricity in the room, but always had a hot shower. The food is 100% delicious, portions sizes are very small. When I told Luis, the manager about this he gave us bigger portions and I even had seconds on the soup. I live in Ecuador and the portion size tend to be quite small. All of the staff are polite, very attentive and eager to answer all questions. A couple of tours are included the price of the stay. Be advised this is the jungle and cockroaches and grasshopper to find their way into the room at night. I sprayed and this took care of those critters. This was a very relaxing trip and I would return to the lodge again.

Room Tip: Be advised that this is the jungle and bugs such as cockroaches and grasshopper will come into the...

I'm guessing I went to the same place as the others, or perhaps we just had different expectations. No I'm not complaining about the electricity, or the hot water, but just the simple things which weren't there.

Pros:
+ units by the river provide a good view
+ clean units, decent bathrooms
+ decent staff

Cons:
- a unit of small bottle of water costs you $1.5, and you'd need plenty of those. Or carry 'em from the Tena market, where you'd get them for 1/4th the price.
- inadequate breakfast, dinner, lunch - you name it! No, I don't eat a lot, but that was still severely inadequate. My hotel in Quito for which I paid 1/10th the amount was 10 times better!
- they are ~10K from the bus terminal in Tena, but no one knows about it. And no, they don't care how/if you reach there. You've got to pay for it.

More generally, we arrived there pretty exhausted from Quito early evening - but well, their package started only from dinner. You want a bottle of water/juice or wanna eat something - pay for it and pay it BIG. Terrible, yes it is!

I understand its the jungle, but well you want the comfort and hence you book the lodge and pay the extra $$$ for it. The mornings might be good, but the nights were ugly. The room was full of roaches and the big bugs, which made me wonder if I was getting what I paid for.

My least favorite part of the vacation in Ecuador, which was otherwise quite brilliant.
Extremely disappointed!!

Room Tip: Rooms by the river

We stayed at Cotococha Lodge for 3 nights/4 days and really enjoyed our time there. The food and service was good and friendly and Luis the barman makes a good cocktail!
Our guide Dario was excellent and thorough in his explanations of everything as we hiked through the rainforest - pointing out plants of medicinal value to the native Indian tribes and how they use them, insects and monkeys!
On the first full day we took the motorised canoe up river then hiked for an hour or so to a sacred waterfall - here we swam in the pure water and had the best showers we've ever had under the falling water! We then hiked back to the canoe and went tubing back to the lodge for lunch (very fun!). In the afternoon we visited a local shaman, learned a bit about how he lived and he then performed a small ceremony for us to cleanse away our bad energies.

The second full day we went to Misahuali to see the monkeys in the square, then down river in the canoe to a spot near Amazoonico (a local animal rescue sanctuary) which was fascinating. We trekked through primary jungle along a route used by the Wairani tribe and later visited a medicinal plants and animal traps centre to see more about how the tribes survive in the amazon.

It's important to note that this place is designed to give you a taster for what it's like in the amazon. Yes there are a few bugs but the rooms are well protected with nets etc. It is accessible by road which in turn means locals do live nearby (yes the road to Misahuali runs along the other side of the river) but if you want relative luxury in the jungle (hot showers and flushing toilets), this is by far your best bet. It's great.

Otherwise pack your hammock and head further into the jungle to find a tree to sleep in and don't complain about the lack of facilities!

We stayed at this venue for 2 nights. Our room, despite having no electricity, had a great view of the Napo river. The beds were comfortable, but the lack of air conditioning led to a difficult night's sleep. As you will imagine in the jungle, there was plenty of noise, but generally this was easily blocked out. The shower rooms were spacious and we had no problems with water. Breakfast was good quality, but the bar was a little on the pricey side.

Room Tip: One with a view of the river.
