“A mixed bag: nice villa, mediocre beach, poor service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

I stayed at Fleur de Sel with my boyfriend over Christmas. Having read the other reviews on trip advisor, our expectations were much higher than what we ended up experiencing. Mrandrew's review was the closest to our experience.

The interior of the villa was nice and modern - comfy sofa, large shower, good bed. It was very clean, and well kept.

The location, however, was a problem for us. Though potentially great, being located on the beach front, it certainly was not one of the nicer beaches on Mahe, with quite a lot of algae, and very still water. So, nice for a wander along, but not fantastic for swimming. There is a better beach about 15 minutes up the road, though.

The location is also very isolated. It is a short walk from the village of Anse Royale, but it's quiet and a bit bleak - there really are only a few small shops and two restaurants (Kaz Kreole is very good). The location wouldn't be so much of a problem if you have a car, but we didn't, so felt a bit stranded and limited.

One of the main problems, though, was the lack of contact with the owners. They did not show up the entire time we were there, which made the experience feel even more isolated. The office was open, but there was never anyone there, which felt a bit creepy! When we arrived the internet didn't work (frustrating, as we were unable to contact our families on Christmas day), and it was impossible to contact the owner about it to get it fixed. It would've been a much better experience had someone been there to give us information, or to help out with enquiries or problems.

Altogether a mixed bag. Main advice would be to only stay there if you rent a car.

Stayed here for a week with the wife and kid. The accommodation is tastefully furnished and provides everything required for self-catering. View is superb, whilst laying on a sunbed on the patio, or from the bedroom. Liked the bathroom and bedroom that are different in layout to most hotels and other apartments. For the price you get this place at, you would expect much less than what you get. Minor constructive criticism would be improved WIFI reception and speed, 1 tv channel for kids (there are only 2 channels available) and a 1st day basic essentials starter pack (milk, water, coffee).

The beach and sea are a stone's throw from the patio. The beach and sea are not the best for tanning or swimming, suffering from a high water tide, rough waters and windy conditions. The beach strip is rather narrow and best during low tide. However the better beaches are a mere 15 minute drive across the ridge of the island on the Western side.

Renting a car is a must, nothing is really within walking distance and what is you would have to risk walking in the road. Rental cars are a steal at 30 euros per day.

Only 2 restaurants nearby, Les Dauphins which has a great host but terrible food, and Kaz Kreol which has terrible service and great food! Grocery stores are nearby and stock most things you would need on a short break. We found the lack of certain food types very strange, even when we ventured into the big SPC in Victoria, we felt sorry for the locals who has a dire choice of basic food stuffs. Road side stalls are minimal and sell mostly veggies. We found only one fruit stall, the pineapples were going for 140 rupees each. The lack of stalls or shops offering curios to tourists is also mind boggling.

Seen petty crime elsewhere on the island, but luckily there is a safe in the bedroom and a night watchman.

There is an ATM machine nearby to stock up on money. Best fish and chips to be found are in Victoria at 40 rupees. Flies and mosquitoes were a pest at the apartment and on beaches.

All in all a great place to unwind and just relax from the view, its location away from the busy crowds and hotels.

Room Tip: There are only 4 units, either of the 4 is great.

Considering the pics from Fleurdecoco, a lot of improvements have been done to protect the spot and to prevent erosion, though with artificial barriers made by rocks.
Anyway the overall is excellent.
In details:

houses are new, with nice nice arrangements (towel for outside and for inside) and space, fully furnished (including flat screen), relaxing veranda, security at night, explanation on arrival of all the facilities, smiles and flowers.
The place is clean and all kitchen stuff are washed every day.
The view over the ocean from bedroom and veranda is perfect.

Location is good. Not excellent. The beach in front of the houses is difficult to be used so better to go to another Anse (very close).
Location is good also for mini-markets and take away. Nearby fishermen are selling fresh fishes and vegs are cultivated few hundred meters far (anyway better to have a car)

cons:
Internet is free, but very slow (minor cons, unless you are addicted)

Amazing place, quite, clean and close to airport.
My daughter (4) enjoyed a lot the "sand" garden in front of stairs and the spacious shower.
All the damages described in other topics have been fixed.
I strongly suggest to rent a car at the airport in order to visit all beatiful beaches.

Just 4 hours from Dubai, this was a great destination for our long weekend. We rented one of four lovely villas in Fleur de Sel. The decor is extremely tasetful and everything that we needed was either provided or within easy reach in the village.

We had the beach directly outside until early-afternoon, when the tide came in but there are beautiful beaches in and around Anse Royale. However, we found that the garden was as great a place as any for the lazy afternoons.

I would strongly recommend this for young families or groups of friends wanting to be together whilst keeping their own privacy.

The local restaurants were OK, not great, but we were happy to cook on the provided BBQ and spend the evenings on the veranda listening to the waves.

Furthermore, repairs have been made to the path meaning that the previous photographs are no longer relevant and the garden looks great.

All in all, it was a great place where we felt very welcome.

Thanks!

We stayed here for our honeymoon and don't have a single complaint. The apartment was spacious, nicely decorated and clean. The staff was very friendly. The verandah faces the sea and the view is great. I especially liked the deck chairs, they're perfect for reading in.
A couple of tips for anyone staying here:
There's an excellent restaurant 5 minutes walk to the north on the beach called Kaz Kreol. Try the pumpkin soup and fillet of red snapper.
There's also a shop a couple of minutes away, try sharkey's vanilla ice cream.
When we were there the sea was a bit rough and the wind was blowing. The sea is calmer at the beach opposite the little island to the north and that's also the best beach at Anse Royal. If the waves are still too big go to Anse La Mouche that's just over the hill and where the sea is really shallow or go to Beau Vallon which is the most popular beach on the island. At Beau Vallon don't buy anything from the guys roaming the beach, they'll rip you off.
If you have a delicate stomach, don't take the boat to Praslin.
If you're a smoker bring your own cigarettes, the local brands are expensive and not very good.
If you see a white and tawny cat hanging around, feed her. She'll eat anything, including ice cream.

These are brand new villas. They're roomy, have a lovely big bed, nice deck outside to rest on, and are directly on the beach. They're a short walk into Anse Royale for shops and restaurants, but are set apart from the town and therefore quieter, which we preferred.

Negatives: the owner was away while we were staying due to a family emergency, so we suspect our experience may have been misrepresentative. However - the Wifi didn't work throughout out stay, and despite many complaints from other guests, nothing was done about it. This was a huge problem for us as we had to reconfirm our flight. Our taxi booking back to the airport was also messed up slightly - despite giving 3 days notice we were initially told the driver had other clients before us and might be late. We also had poor drainage in our shower (which caused a flood in the bathroom) but this was fixed. There's a TV provided, but it only has 3 channels on it - a bit pointless, we felt! We also felt there wasn't anyone around most of the time to talk to about issues, or contact if we'd had an emergency, which was slightly unnerving.

The other negative is that the sea literally comes up to the steps from the grounds, so there isn't really a beach. However there's a public one just down the road which is lovely.

However - it's great value and it's lovely accommodation. I'm sure the issues we had are rare.
