“Tired and run down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2012

This hotel is in dire need of a facelift. The rooms are separate from the main biulding - our had a dirty pink decor, very small bathroom with cracked washbasin and mould around the shower. The bar is poor, the restaurant not operational (apart from a good breakfast) and the receptionist has to leave her job behind the bar to deal with your reservation. The TV in the room is old fashioned with a very small screen and stuck high on the wall. I won't be going back.

we arrived to hotel saltess, outside the hotel is quite run down, we reserved our judement, but that didnt last. we waited 15 mins at the so called reception area, in the end we went looking for staff, it seems only one staff member was on duty covering the bar washing dishes and taking food orders. the main toilets were off reception, the smell of urine when u passed was terrible. to our shock we asked the staff member about night life and were would be nice to go, to our shock there is no pub resturant opened in the village. we got to our room to say the least it was the worst room i have ever stayed in, the stains on the carpet were vile, the bathroom was small and dirty, the sink was falling apart!! the decor was terrible, walls were brown in colour were paintings were taken down and never replaced!!! we declined to eat in hotel saltees, we checked out at 8am, only up side was the breakfast, to our shock the price they are charing for this experience is unreal, staff didint seem interested to our complaints, we wont be returning!!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I first stayed here about 11 years ago for one night so when we had the opportunity for a 2 night break (Mon and Tues night) we jumped at the chance to go back to Kilmore Quay as we had always loved it but hadn't been back in 11 years. We booked in to the Saltees as we were more than happy with it when we stayed last, but while we got a fantastic reception from staff when checking in we were very disappointed with how dilapidated the place had become, through an obvious lack of interest on the owner's part as everything that was wrong could be sorted very quickly and without much expense. For instance on pulling up at Reception, the lettering over the main door had 3 letters missing so it read "H TEL S LTE S"! Then we were allocated our room and at first we were happy enough until we started noticing that there were "tide" marks on the walls where pictures once hung, also on one wall there were still hooks. The en suite shower room was clean enough but the hand basin had a huge crack near the plug hole which had been repaired with some sort of adhesive that just looked filthy and the over all decor in the room was really dated.

We had to ring reception for a remote control for the tv, which was duly brought to us almost immediately, but it didn't work anyway so we decided to just operate it manually. The kettle didn't seem to work either, after approx 40 mins I decided the water was hot enough for my coffee and it was, but the next day when my husband was making tea he did the same thing and when he put the kettle back in the cradle there was a loud bang and a blue flash! That put an end to our tea/coffee making facilities! We informed the girl at reception on checking out but she didn't seem too perturbed!

All around the outside of the rooms there are hanging baskets with dead flowers in them. Like, what is the point? Either re-plant them or get rid! Such a pity as the hotel is lovely and personable and has a lot of potential if only the little details were given attention. And as there are now no pubs open in the village the lounge in the hotel is the only place for people to go for a drink without leaving the village, so they should make the most of that and improve on what they've got! On the upside, they serve a fantastic breakfast!

Stayed here last week (mid September ), thought from the web that it was 130euro each for 2 nightsB&B and 1dinner. With the main courses averaging 20quid each, this felt like a bargain. On arrival we were told that the restaurant was closed and "residents"'dinners would be served in the bar...when we looked at the residents menu it was a different matter, very limited and boring, and the idea of eating in the bar with a large tv in the corner, and some foul mouthed locals holding court did not appeal. We ate out in Kehoes (pretty good) on the Friday night and in The Crazy Crab on Saturday night (out of this world and for under sixty quid for two, including starters, mains, bottle of good white (New Zealand) wine and two glasses of red wine, see separate review.
Rooms are motel type, bit dull, shower could do with a good clean, black mould on lower tiles, a few creepy crawlies appeaed when the water was turned on!
That being said, staff were great, could not be more helpful.

The hotel is fine. We stayed here for 2 nitein mid june. Rooms are a bit dated but clean and have everything you need. We had some very noisy neighbours on the first nite, but this can't be helped!
The location is great, just a short stroll to kehoe's bar which is a lovely spot! Everywhere is within walking distance.
My only problem with the hotel really was the price. €110 per nite including breakfast!
I have stayed in much cheaper and more modern hotels in dublin and galway for less!
If like me you don't like staying in B&B's then hotel saltees is your only other option in Kilmore Quay, and it is fine base for a couple of nites, maybe they are open to haggling on the price!
