“The Far North”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

My wife and I stayed for a few days at the Forsinard Hotel in June 2012. We enjoyed a lovely few days in this most remote part of the Highlands. John and his wife are very good hosts making ones stay most enjoyable, they run a lovely relaxed hotel with a well set up bar. The suppers are excellent and breakfast which really sets you up for the day. There is acres of space in the hotel with loads of comfortable arm chairs. If you are a trout fisherman, birdwatcher country person this is the place to take a break. The RSPB center is there across the road. Lots to do with Thurso just up the road.

It was our second visit to the Forsinard Hotel and we were not dissappointed. A very warm welcome, great food (the breakfasts, steaks and seafood are excellent!!) and lots of advice on what to do in the local area. As keen fishermen we ventured out into the wilds of the highlands for a few days on their beautiful lochs. And we caught some of the lively wild brown trout. If you do come up this way be sure to pop in for a drink in the well stocked bar or even better stay the night.

A Very Friendly Hotel in an amazing location.
Good bar with darts, pool, etc.
Been here twice and ever been disappointed:
5 Star Service,
5 Star Location,
5 Star Food (looks to bar standard, but it's all fresh meat from the surrounding area so tastes amazing),
3 Star Rooms (good 3 star in that)

Definitely Reccomend

Hotel is geared up for the hunting, shooting fishing crowd but they were very helpful to me as a walker/mountain biker helping me find out which areas were free of Stalking the next day. Prices are really aimed at the stalker so aren't fantastic value compared to other options in Caithness/Sutherland but the location is second to none and there is nowhere else to stay in Forsinard so its a captive market. Overall a good place to spend a night if you're in the area.

A fantastic hotel. Guests are almost all there to fish or stalk or walk and build up a very nice rapport. Hosts are fantastic. The food is straight off the hills and is outstanding value - some of the best steak and venison you will find anywhere in the world. Presentation may be "bar food" but there are Michelin restaurants that do a worse job at four times the price.

You need to book in advance as the small number of rooms are well sought after. This is not a five star property, but it is a five star hotel for people who appreciate the remote beauty of this part of Sutherland.

I have visited The Forsinard Hotel numerous times over the years and have always found it the most welcoming place to stay. The owners Kim and John Leonard simply cannot do enough for you. My room in the hotel is always clean and tidy, there is an en-suite bathroom and fresh towels are provided. I have eaten both from the bar meal menu, which is rather extensive considering the limitations of living in the middle of nowhere, and also in the dining room which serves good local produce cooked beautifully. The bar is always well stocked and the knowledge you can pick up is priceless. The whole family always make me feel very welcome. How anyone could be unhappy with such a place astounds me.

Having been to this hotel before, with my children who are now teenagers I thought I would treat my Mum and her sister. Wow what a reception - Mum was bowled over by the owners thoughtfulness and attention to detail. The food was to die for, Venison with a providence - not the bits your butcher sells you! The company in the bar was great with a sparkling selection of Malts which you must see to believe. We used the hotel as a base for a few days while showed them the local coastline etc and whenever we arrived back our every want was catered for. Very easy to relax here as the hotel is always lovely and warm - with the best selection of books in the library along with comfy soft cushons and lovely leather sofas. As Arnie says "I'll be back"
