“National Romantic Style Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2014

This house is a real find and only about an hour by car from Helsinki city centre. It is set in an elevated position above a lake and seemed on the grey misty day that we visited, to be in a world of its own. Now owned and operated by the state , we were the only one`s there on the day we visited and really enjoyed the fine detailing on the outside of the house using natural stone and logs, as well as the marvellous attention to detail within. Most of the furniture is also home made and fits beautifully into its setting. The world famous architect Eero Saarinen lived here as a boy and this wonderful house must have been a huge influence on him. The café served us a very good lunch too.

“More specific to architects than anything else”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

I'm not much of a history buff, and although I appreciate architecture as much as the next guy, I wasn't very impressed with this "museum."

Initially a house for a group of Finnish architects, Hvittrask is now an open museum. It features everything you would find in a...erm...house. Bathrooms, living room, pantries and what have you. We covered the entire museum in just under an hour.

What was more fascinating than the actual building was the surrounding scenery. Perched on the edge of a rise close to a lake, the setting is just inspiring. Make sure to visit the house's "balcony" for a breath of fresh forest air.

“Where Finnish architecture really began”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

Hvittrask is built above a lake; it's a compound of buildings first designed and occupied by three Finnish architects about a century ago. But it doesn't feel dated at all--it's as "modern" in its sensibility as the gleaming buildings of downtown Espoo, nearby. It's fascinating to see how the architects used Finnish styles and motifs, and how confidently they did so. They both lived and worked here, and I intensely envied them.

After touring the buildings, we had a delicious meal in the adjacent restaurant. A wedding had just taken place in the small formal garden, and the reception was going on in an adjacent room--the quietest wedding party I've ever heard!

If you can get out of Helsinki, especially on a sunny day, by all means visit Hvittrask.
