“Perfect Tuscan holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

If you want to find a place which is quiet and peaceful, nestling in stunning countryside, perfectly placed between Florence, Pisa and Lucca and a pool with a view to take your breath away - look no further. Add simply but stylishly furnished rooms and superb hospitality and you have, for us, the perfect break. Sergio is a fount of information about the region and will give advice about where to go and the best place to park when you get there, while Cecilia produces a range of delicious local dishes, often using their own produce. We had lots of interesting conversations in spite - or because of - an interesting range of languages around the table. Not to mention a highly competitive paper darts competition one evening. Just don't ask for a spoon to eat your spaghetti ... You'll get a lesson on how to use your fork!

In the beginning of August this year we had the pleasure of spending a couple of days at Cecilia & Sergio's house again. We were there in June 2011 and summarized the visit as a stay in the "luxury of simplicity and silence" and that impression lasts. On arrival this time, we again immediately felt the friendly and calm atmosphere, an impression that lasted throughout our stay. Evenings together with our hosts and other guests sitting around a common table in open air, talking, discussing and eating a well prepared dinner with the right local touch accompanied by good wine from the neighbors wine yard, this just has to be experienced.
However second time at a location, one normally experience other things than what was important or made impression on the first visit. F.ex. at night, sleeping with open windows and feeling the light warm breeze from the hills of Tuscany, best two night sleep in a long time. In the early evening just relaxing looking out over the surrounding hills, silence and fantastic view that makes an important part of the total picture, not only for this but for several Agro-Tourism places in the area. Again we had a pleasant stay at Cecilia & Sergio's place.

When comming to Settesoldi you need to be aware that you are part of the family for the time of your stay. Sergio gives you a warm welcome to his house and you need to "follow" his rules on italian life style. Meaning that you have a late dinner with the fantastic food cooked by Cecilia, with long discussions and very nice music. In the morning you have a late sweet italian breakfast . Sergios tipps for sightseeing are a definitely MUST! Better do not trust you GPS when comming to Settesoldi, but follow Sergios map. Especially when you reach the country road follow the "agriturismo" sign (carefull it says only " agriturismo").

Close your eyes and imagine a rustic Tuscan farmhouse at the top of a hill dappled in amber light. Imagine an idyllic scene, for example a handmade wooden table laid out with fresh garden vegetables and greens, a glass of ruby colored wine whose grapes had collected the sun on the very slopes that unfold below you, a light pasta seasoned with herb from the garden at your feet and drizzled in the oil of the olives growing all around you. Imagine there's music playing, gently in the background. Imagine a place so beautiful it hurts your eyes. Imagine the Platonic ideal of the Tuscan countryside in all it's rural, bucolic beauty. Imagine what you hope Tuscany is like. What the word Tuscany says to you. This is what Settesoldi gives you.

Our three day trip began with a difficult exit from Florence in an unfamiliar car (and cursing that we had no GPS), followed by the "interesting" drive from the autostrada up progressively more rustic roads with a hand-drawn map that we simply had to trust... Suffice to say, we arrived at Agriturismo Settesoldi with a lot of tension! Within literally minutes of Sergio's welcome and breathing the delicious air of the beautiful property, we were smiling and happy, in a way we had not felt in a long time.

Dinner is always on the late side (around 9pm or later), but absolutely worth the wait. After our first meal, there was never a question about where we would have dinner! Cecilia is a genius in the kitchen and Sergio a brilliant host. The chance to share the meal with the few other guests (there are only three rooms) also gave us a wonderful opportunity (across multiple languages) to get ideas for how to spend our time. Sergio is an astonishing fount of information, and you simply have to trust that whatever he tells you will be the best, whether it is a particular drive, a cheap or even free place to park in Pisa or Florence, which hilltown to visit, the best gelato etc.

The bedroom was simple but had everything we needed, including enough sockets for us to charge our devices without sacrificing light (not every agriturismo or hotel in Italy has this, by any means). The bathroom, with shower, bidet, toilet and sink, was plenty large enough. And the bed was amazing: just the right amount of firm.

The small pool was a little chilly for us at the end of the day, so we didn't spend as much time in it as we thought we would. One reason was the mosquitoes (?) that swarmed around when you were in the water, but curiously not when sitting at the side of the pool. Those mosquitoes also had a thing about arriving cars, but not about the passengers who exited...

One particularly special thing was the absence of TV, children and dogs - it really added to the peaceful and restorative atmosphere.

But Sergio (and Cecilia's cuisine) were the highlight of this all too short trip. He is such a character: friendly and a little over the top at times, yet discreet and honest and open with his opinions. We were very sorry to say goodbye, and just wished we could have found room in our luggage for his delicious olive oil.

Breakfast, like dinner, was always late (never before 9, sometimes as late as 9:30), so if you have a busy day out, don't hang around. However, if you are taking it easy, definitely get it. But dinner is the highlight of the day: no less than 2.5 hours, three or four courses, complete with delicious local wine and coffee. If you are lucky enough to enjoy the spaghetti alla chianti, you will realize that you are truly in heaven.

A heavenly place indeed, and we will long hold onto the memories of our all too short time there.

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms, so expect personal attention.

We stayed here for one week at the beginning of August for our honeymoon and had a wonderfully relaxing time. We would definitely advise renting a car if you haven't brought your own as we needed ours every day. We visited Sienna, San Gimignano, Lucca, Volterra and Pisa during our stay. None of these were to far, and Sergio advised us of places to see. The food was incredible, we ate with them 3 nights out of 7 and thoroughly enjoyed it! If you are looking for a remote getaway with beautiful scenery and perfect weather every day this is the place for you. We loved it and would definitely go back

This is a little, difficult to find, owners-run little gem. This agriturismo is perfectly located half-way between Florence and Pisa, making it the ideal base to explore this part of Tuscany.
Sergio and Cecilia will make you feel you are at home and will give you great advices on what to visit and explore in the region.
You can not miss having dinner with them: the home-made food (no choice, no menu, you get what they make on the day with fresh products, often from their own vegetable garden) is to die for.
The wine, sourced locally of course, is also fantastic and inexpensive.
With my family we ended up having dinner with them every single day.
It is a simple, genuine and very quiet place - nothing fancy but I am sure you will enjoy it!
