Stayed here 7 nights.Good standard hotel. Many have said its for business travellers and conventions but I was here as a tourist and staying longer than the average guest. They could not have been more obliging, upgrading my room to premium quality and offering some complimentary trips in the hotels taxis....excellent drivers too.The food was outstanding with a full a la carte menue and about 20 hot buffet dishes every night.Good choice at breakfast, they even opened the restaurant for me an hour early (at 6am!) on the day of my departure. They are trying very hard to please. They recommended some tourist attractions that I wouldnt otherwise have known. Full marks.

I can understand some people being a bit disappointed with this hotel, mainly due to the location and layout. This is why I recommend doing your research thoroughly before deciding to book. We chose this hotel because it is good for backwater access and is in an area of Kerala not associated with foreign tourism and therefore offers a true picture of real south Indian life. The hotel itself is difficult to criticise as it is of a good quality standard. No worries about grubby beds or bathrooms and you even have a daily newspaper (in English) delivered to your room every morning. The staff were friendly and gave the impression that they were genuinely pleased that you were staying there. Admittedly there were some areas which could have been better such as waiters forgetting your requests etc, but generally service was well intentioned. It's true that holiday companies such as Mercury Direct market this as a conventional holiday hotel but remember it is not. The primary use is for business guests and conferences etc and the majority are Indian clients. If you're looking for a resort style hotel this may not be for you. The beach is a working beach for local fishermen (who also use it as a toilet) and certainly not for sunbathing, even thought the hotel sends a lad down every day who sets out a row of beds and sun shades. The local people of Kollam flock down to the beach at the end of every day to watch the sun go down and is packed on Sundays with families and little seller stalls which is amazing to see. Swimming in the sea is a big no no - a skull and crossbones sign warns of the deaths in the last two years ( I think it said either 14 or 18). The buffet style selection in the restaurant is geared toward Indians with mainly curries etc on offer. But no complaints really as a menu is available with other choices and at breakfast the chef will make you eggs and bacon for example if you don't want buffet. We did hear dogs barking at night sometimes but this wasn't a big deal ( there is a house in front of the hotel with dogs, goats, cows and chickens- I kid you not), the beds are very comfortable and large and sleeping wasn't a problem. We were given a very large premium room (7th floor) on the front of the hotel for one week and then a standard room for second week as we were told the 7th floor needed electrical work doing and had to be closed. This wasn't handled particularly well and I had to chase up the staff as they'd left all my shirts in the first room (they're nice but dim). The second room was smaller but still very nice. We wandered about ourselves and explored the backwaters etc, but the hotel also arranged their driver and mini bus to take us out to a couple of places including a trip to hilly area around Thenmala and had a taxi drive us around the town and lighthouse etc and anywhere we wanted to go locally, all free of charge.
So to sum up, a comfortable, clean good standard hotel but arguably better suited to the more adventurous traveller.

Both my Husband and I have stayed in many 5 star hotels, and this certainly is not one.

It took over 3 ¼ of an hour for us to be checked in. The room was nice and clean throughout our stay. The hotel did not have wi fi or did it have internet connection during our stay. The breakfast choice was appalling, food was cold when delivered. The pool was nice and the attendant was lovely, in addition the bar staff was very nice, the rest of the staff should take a leaf out of their books. Impossible to sleep, barking dogs all night. I’m not a complainer, but this was a very disappointing choice.
Would not revisit.

Have just come back from 10 day stay at this hotel. Lovely hotel, service excellent but definately not hotel for a holiday. This is a business hotel not a hotel for holidaymakers. We went with Mercury Direct and they should make it clear that this is a business hotel. There is absolutely nothing to do. Hotel arranged four trips (free) in their mini bus. The driver got lost on one trip but we did see real Kerala. This hotel is fine if you want to visit the backwaters but only for a short stay. The pool is in front of the dining room windows so you feel like you are entainment for the diners. There are only four loungers and the lovely pool man keeps the pool and surrounging area really clean. There is no private access to a very public dirty beach. The roof top pool you share with noisey huge air conditioning units and only one lounger. Not international cuisine, very indian and the a la carte menu a bit hit and miss. The staff are extremely attentive and helpful. Great hotel wrong location. Joan, Liverpool

The Beach Orchid is a nice, quiet place to relax from a busy schedule

As you enter don’t be put of by the not so exciting building structure, is ensures you get the best view from your room

The Staff might not be graduates form the best hospitality school
But there sincere care and friendly is service is sure commendable,

They have a nice restaurant with a pool and beach view,
But if you really want a swim try the almost private pool on the terrace

Dont miss a walk on the beach, it is a 3 mins stroll away

Try getting the Room on the Seventh or Eight Floor, they are better than the rest and better equipped

The best part of the hotel is the lovely beach view we get from each and every room,

If you ever end up in Kollam, This is the Best Hotel There
