“Lovely stay in Vila Nova de Milfontes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2007

Delightful stay in beautiful surroundings. The views from the castelo were lovely. Rooms were comfortable - no modern comforts (eg TV, radio etc) Bathroom accessed over the corridor. Staff very helpful. We were recommended two excellent restaurants - we went to both and they were not disappointing. Had breakfast in courtyard conservatory, which looked over the estuary. We just wished the breakfasts has been a bit more hearty. ( Just continental, with rolls and coffee.) Overall a lovely stay, but a bit overpriced.

The location is breathtaking and the castle charming, we were in a tower room and the views were spectacular. The service and staff are excellent. The only drawback is that you need to be back in the castle by 12.00 at night which is a littel early but as we were only staying one night we didn't mind.

Spent one night in this really quaint hotel which has just seven rooms and is a converted castle. The rooms are all very different and have lovely views of the inlet and the sea. The furniture is antique and the whole atmosphere is very 20's/30's. Our room was en suite but the others seemed to have their bathrooms across a small hallway, although they were private. You enter the castle via a drawbridge and are let in by the maid. She shows you to your room but does not give you a key as there aren't any. Neither is there a key to the front door, which is locked at midnight, but someone is always on hand when you ring the bell. The hotel has a flower filled courtyard where breakfast (very simple) is served in the mornings. There is a charming bar with an honesty book, well stocked with board games and books. The whole thing is charming if a bit expensive. Outside the immediate castle area, the town is somewhat naff being an ugly sixties type sprawl. I was recommended the hotel by a friend but would probably not visit again. As a one off experience it was good, but overall not worth the €137 a night room fee.

  • Liked — The antique furniture, the suits of armour and the atmosphere
  • Disliked — A sparsity of 21st century comforts.

We had a wonderful stay here. We were greeted by the host/owner of the property who was very polite and helpful. He recommended a wondeful place nearby to have delicious seafood. The "castelo" itself was very quiet and romantic. The views from our corner room and the courtyard were breathtaking. Each room had its own bath, which was large and very clean. A table was set for us in the courtyard in the morning for breakfast. The beach was within walking distance. And there's plenty of nearby places to walk to for a drink in the evening. We stayed in a regular room which has two twin beds, but might stay in the tower room next time. Being from there originally, I visit Portugal every two years and staying at this "Castelo" is one pleasant memory I will never forget.

  • Liked — authentic castle
  • Disliked — twin bed arrangement
  • Tips/Secrets — try to stay at the tower room for double bed

First of all, the little village of Vila Nova de Milfontes is our absolute favorite place in Portugal. It is on a beautiful site where the Miro River runs into Atlantic, and so you have beaches on both sides of the river, as well as on the Ocean, to choose from. The town is clean and unassuming, with loads of beach-town character, as well as some wonderful cheap fresh seafood resturants.
The Castelo de Milfontes is perfectly located on the river, with views to the mouth of the river and the ocean. It is a one-of-a-kind experience for those who are looking for something different. The castle is 400 years old, and has been restored with 7 bedrooms, each with private bath. The downstairs has beautiful antiques in the formal dining room, living room, and in the ''honor bar''. These rooms look out onto a bouganvilla-filled patio with views out to the river and ocean. We were there in the summer, and so our breakfast, which comes with the room, was served out in the patio.
The upstairs bedrooms are large and simple, with antiques and ample room. Pillows were a bit lumpy (!), and there is no airconditioning, but we had no trouble sleeping at all! Because of the way the rooms are arranged, each room faces the river, with their bathrooms across the small hallway. The baths are private, and are quite large and modern. There is a fabulous roof deck with 360 degree views and wonderful breezes. We brought our cocktails from the well-stocked honor bar up here in the evenings and watched the tide go out and the stars come out.
Although the castle was full, we hardly saw anyone else around. The staff is quite friendly and helpful, although very respectful of your privacy, and so the whole experience was one of tranquility and peace.
You can order lunch or dinner, and from the wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen one day, we wished we had! However, there are numerous restaurants right outside the door of the castle, and we had wonderful fresh seafood for all our meals.
The beach is just a short walk down the hill, and the staff provided portable chairs and umbrellas for you to take with you.
We will definitely be back to this charming castle and village.
