“The mountains are incredibly beautiful when their flanks are bathed in evening red”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014

A chance to relax after some spectacular but gruelling walks,is offered at the Caldes de Boi,a baths fed by a 25 degree spring which probably dates back to Roman times. We followed our soak with a trip to Lake St. Maurici known as "twisted waters'. part of this trip route is done in a 4-wheel drive.

This region is characterised by water, more than 50 lakes, numerous waterfalls, marshes and bogs, not to mention, meandering rivers flowing along granite and slate formations. Its epic, scenic and ever so, beautiful. Ther are numerous guided or individual walks that you can assail against the magnificent 3000 m peaks, the most impressive of which bears the name of"the enchanted". this leads to the spellbinding peace of the darkly shimmering lakes, the coniferous and birch forests and the treeless meadow lands.

With little luck,we walkers were rewarded by seeing chamois, capercaillies, and mountain eagles, and a few mountain voles and marmots. We followed the broad Segre Valley, hardly noticing that we were at 1100 m above sea-level. the views of the mountains are incredibly beautiful, particularly in the evenings when their flanks are bathed in shades of red light. The precipitous North face is a veritable Eldorado for Catalan climbers.

“Parc National Aigüestortes Sant Maurici”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

It is the only national park in Catalonia. The landscape is mountain with an impressive relief and a wealth of flora and fauna. The water, with almost 200 lakes and countless streams, is the protagonist.

“Many options, great views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2014

There are two main entrances: east from Espot to Sant Maurici lake and west from Boi.

From Espot, drive 4 km more to the parking lot. From there it is 1h15m to the lake, and from there there are multiple trekking options. There is a taxi service that can take you to the lake directly, but then you will miss great views along the way.

From Boi, take the exit between Boi and Caldes de Boi, and after 1.5km you get to the parking. From there you have 2.5h of waterfalls, Llebreta lake and San Nicolas church to get to Aigues Tortes, a prairie criss-crossed by the river.

In both cases, the parking is free and there is an info booth; the guys are helpful and can point some tracks and they hand out a small map (not much, better get one from "Alpina" collection). Tracks are well marked anyway, although get covered easily during winter.

Get good shoes, bring your sandwich (no stores further than Espot and Boi) and a get there early to avoid crowds. And take back your trash!

The east side has higher mountains or, at least, higher difference between the prairies and the peaks. The low lands are great in autumn with red forests, and in winter until late spring the peaks are packed with snow; great zone for snow showshoes and cross-country skiing.
