“A modern log cabin at the end of an old-time dirt road...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2010

Currant Ridge cabins are modern, very clean, spacious, comfortable, and within a short drive to the Mccarthy footbridge and the Mccarthy/Kennicott /Wrangell-St Elias "attractions." The cabins offer a nice basic kitchen (bring food if you plan to cook! - there is only one small general store in Mccarthy), a large private bath, no TV or phone (nice and quiet!). The owners, the Shidner's, are welcoming, pleasant, and helpful.

The cabins are very spacious with all of the comforts of home, but with a much better view! These are set in a very beautiful area. We loved sitting on the deck listening to the river and looking at the mountains. The Shidner's are very friendly and welcoming. If we make it back to this area, we will definitely stay here again.

We'd been camping in the rain for several days and stopped at the first cabin rental place we came to ...we lucked out. Current Ridge is really nice, as are the owners. Very well appointed cabins with the luxury (after tenting) of hot showers! The pricing is very reasonable...we've stayed in the lodge before and paid a lot more for a "hotel room" with a bath down the hall. Our only complaint is that with 4 people, two of us were on the "evil hide-a-bed" couch - they offered to bring in an air bed but we tossed the mattress on the floor and - after sleeping in the mud for 5 days- it was fine.
Got an educational tour of the solar system -- they are doing it right! They even have a nice dog! It is at the top of the list for a return visit.

I highly recommend these cabins, they have got to be the best accommodations in McCarthy, and some of the nicest cabins I've stayed in in Alaska.

My wife and I just spent an unforgettable 3 nights at Currant Ridge Cabins. I can think of no more idyllic way to become acquainted with the magnificent Wrangell-St. Elias National Park region than by staying in the area's newest luxury wilderness cabins run by the hospitable, generous and environmentally conscious Cynthia and Andy Shidner.

We looked at other highly reviewed lodges on the internet and later inspected them in person after we arrived. Most have been around for 20 years or more, are noisy and crowded, have small rooms and have shared bathrooms located down the hall. Currant Ridge Cabins which opened five years ago, is the newest and most deluxe individual non-smoking cabins. One evening, Cynthia gave us fresh spinich and other spices from her large outdoor garden to make a fresh salad.

These cabins are located a couple miles from the end of the 60 mile McCarthy gravel road, before the McCarthy pedestrian bridge. This location allows guests to drive right up to their cabin's front door to unload their luggage. Most of the older lodges and hotels are located on the other other side of the McCarthy pedestrian bridge in McCarthy or Kennecott. This requires guests to push or carry their luggage across the pedestrian bridge. They must then load their luggage on to a shuttle van for a five to twenty minute shuttle ride to their hotel...depending upon where they are staying

These new quiet and spacious cabins have magnificent views of the Wrangell mountains, private bathrooms, kitchens equipped with all pots, pans and utensils and a large private deck with a Barbeque. They are very well priced and feature a large queen bed. The rooms are furnished with high end mattresses and plush comforters. The Shidner's pull out all the stops for their guests and their attention to detail is evident. Andy arranged a reservation for us with the Alaska Marine car Ferry for our return from Valdez via Prince William Sound. He recommended the best local flightseeing pilot to see the national park, restaurants, and outfitter for hiking on Root Glacier. Highly recommended.

If anyone is going to visit McCarthy and Kennicott, you should stay at Currant Ridge! The cabins are fantastic! Everything is very well equipped: linens, dishes, silverware, etc. The owners were very nice about letting us have our dogs (one large, one medium) and two extra people. The property is run on solar panels and generators, so I was worried about a shortage of electricity and hot water. No problems at all! I would recommend that anyone coming to McCarthy stock up on anything you may want in Glenallen, as the general store is extremely limited and expensive. (I believe it is a 200 mile round trip for supplies). Although the restaurant menu at the hotel in Kennicott looked fabulous, they had limited service times. We had a great time, Currant Ridge played a huge part!
