“Relaxing time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2011

The Neptune Pwani Hotel was an excellent choice, beautiful white beaches. The hotel was very clean and the rooms outstanding. The food was good, we just missed eating some fresh fish on a BBQ! Remember to take some snacks and a few good books with as this is not available at the hotel. The hotel shop only have the very basics like suntan lotion. Try and stay away from the beach boys as they hassle you. Do look out for Zena, a lady selling the nicest sandles on the beach! One can negotiate a price of about 15 USD a pair.
Take some mosquito repellant - there are nice mosquito nets in the rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a seafront room not just seaview!

Arrived back today after a 10 day trip. Beautiful hotel, clean, well presented and the staff hard working and friendly. Rooms lovely, resort lovely and for the most part relaxing and peaceful (except for two very drunk South African girls who really showed themselves up). If you can't hack the beach boys, then just ignore them completely and they give up, we didn’t let this put us off swimming in the sea.
We had a great time, well worth the long journey. However, if you are looking to book from the UK, try and book with Thomas Cooks Belgium equivalent, they fly direct from Brussels to Zanzibar, transferring from UK to Brussels will be much better than Nairobi, and I believe from discussions with a man from Bruges, who is a regular visitor, considerably cheaper.
The activities organiser down by the pool at the main restaurant organises a walk to the local village about ½ a mile up the beach, this is a must, his knowledge and presentation was really good, the contrast is very grounding. (Take lots of crayons and pencils with you as the little children will love it).
Remember, this is Africa, its developing, the staff work hard and do a good job, better than service i have had in UK and Europe for considerably less pay we tipped regulalry. Take $s with you and pleanty of $1, which are great for tips.

Room Tip: We had a 1st floor room by the main pool, to the left of reception as you come into the hotle. Quiet...

Wow.. if you are looking for a picturesque honeymoon experience, Zanzibar is the place to go and Neptune is the hotel to stay in.

The Vibe: Neptune is a beautiful hotel that is not your typical hotel. Villa/Double storey chalets just alongside the Pwani beach. Rooms are simple and pretty. The grounds are beautiful. The thatch effect makes it feel more African with a touch of luxury with a Rustic twist.

The Beach: We visited a few beaches on the island (not all.. there are So many), but the Pwani beach we felt was definitely the best out of what we say. Clean beaches. (no litter etc..). REALLY low tide, so you get the picturesque sand spots in the middle of the sea that you can walk to. And nice wavy high tide, that you can swim and body surf in. Water was so warm and clear.

The best attributes: Other than both of the above,
• the staff are so friendly and welcoming.
• Entertainment every evening, over drinks and Great buffet selection everyday
• Hotel really feels like it is right on the beach
• Luxurious, but with small Rustic touches that remind you, that you are on an exotic island

The worst attributes: There is almost nothing to say, but there were two small annoyances that our rating from an EXCELLENT to a VERY GOOD

• The only negative would be the Beach boys. (People that walk up and down the beach selling things). At first they are quite entertaining as there are friendly and talkative but after a while, you just get tired of hearing the sales pitch, and would like to do what you came to Zanzibar to do.. chill, drink and swim.

• The “Water-sports Centre” – We were not quite sure why Neptune had a “Water-sports Centre” as all they really offered were Kayaks and Boats. The staff in this centre were not very helpful, and just out-source you to the suppliers that do offer excursions.

Best for
• Honeymoons
• Groups of friends
• People wanting to tan and relax

Not really ideal for
• Families with small kids. There was a handful of small kids there, but not quite sure what they could get up to.

Room Tip: Seaview - amazing view, but expect to climb a few flights of stairs to get up the hill Seaside - cl...

We spent 2 weeks at this resort and all i can say it is was stunning! It is a very relaxing resort not a lot happening during the evening. This really could be improved with a little bit of imagination. There are a few good evenings Acrobats, dancers and Masai but this is a little spoilt when you see the Masai on the beach the next day trying to sell products from their shops!
The gardens are very well kept and they are maintained with loving care every day. They are pristine.
The accommodation is in good condition and is cleaned to a very high standard.I would say that 95% of the staff are very friendly and in no way surly as i read on previous reviews.I also read that the grounds beach and pool were unclean. This is NOT so.The beach is raked every morning along with the resort beach and pool areas. The only rubbish i ever saw was the odd cigarette butt!!There is waiter service on the beach and pool area, towels are also provided. The beach sellers can be a hassle they do approach you every time you go into the sea ,they even shout at you whilst you are sunbathing on the resorts area.I would be careful when dealing with these guys some are ok but some can be aggressive. Whilst we were there x2 beach sellers who sold trips were arrested because they didn't have a license and we witnessed one get aggressive with a guest because he didn't buy cigarettes he had asked for.In some circumstances the trips are the same price has the hotel so shop around as the trips can be expensive. We booked x2 with the hotel Jozani forrest and Stone Town both were excellent. We booked a Dhow trip with the beach boys again very good.Beach shoes are recommended lots of urchins but hey this is nature!Make sure you have a walk out to the sand bank or reef if you can manage it lots of eels star fish and other. We were very lucky to do both and one day actually saw a whale along the reef shore line brilliant!
We also used the spa very very good and reasonable.Make sure you use all the facilities Sauna steam room and Jacuzzi.
The food was good but i will admit it did become a little Un-inspiring after 2 weeks being a vegetarian there is only so much pasta and salad you can eat!The snack bar as no option apart from chips i thought this was definitely a down fall. One day i asked for a cheese sandwich which didn't happen! The sandwiches and snacks at the bar again don't really cater for vegetarians. These sandwiches can become a little soggy. My partner eats all food and loved the food.We also tried the Pizza a la carte brilliant! The seafood restaurant was quite good also.
The bar staff are brilliant at the Ngawala bar this is the quiet bar but the guys are fab not really so quiet!Juma Bonaza mawazo please say hello from Matt and Tina!!! Many a good night spent there.
The best tip i can give you is relax at the resort go with the pace and enjoy you will love it.We did and we had a fabulous holiday!

Room Tip: We had one on the sea side view very very close to the beach away from the main restuant area quiet!

We used this hotel as a destination in itself and after spending a week here I would definitely NOT recommend going all this way for a holiday in this hotel. We did have a seaview however we had to climb 61 stairs to get to our room so not recommended if you have heath problems. The room itself was very comfortable and clean. We would have preferred a bath. We were not bothered by mosquitoes although we did still spray ourselves with repellent and took Malarone (no side effects). The gardens were very well maintained.
Reception: Were not very helpful or welcoming. When we arrived we were told that our room was up the stairs and the restaurant was to the left and to keep going.

Currency exchange: You cannot change travellers cheques or get cash from your card at this hotel so make sure you have plenty of cash with you. They only have a limited amount of Tanzanian currency. The nearest bank.ATM is in Stone Town and this will cost you $60 (sixty) round taxi trip.

Shuttle Bus: Although it states in the room information pack that there is a shuttle bus, there definitely is not one. Again if you wish to go to Stone Town it will cost you $60 (sixty) round taxi trip.

Food: The food was quite poor. We struggled each mealtime to find something interesting to eat. The soup was OK but everything else seemed to taste the same despite having different names for the dishes. The sweet section was by far the worst we have ever come across. You can get snacks at the pool restaurant but this was hit and miss as to what time they decided to provide them. Sometimes it was 10 – 12 then other times it was 12 – 2.

Drinks: We were stunned to find that one of the most popular cocktails, Pina Colada, was not on the all inclusive menu and would cost $10 per drink.

Beach: It was not possible to just take a stroll along the beach as you were pestered by the beach boys pushing you to book trips or see their shop. It always starts off ,hello my friend’ and then they get quite hostile when you try to ignore them.

Evening Entertainment: Not very good.

Sea: The sea is full of sea urchins and broken coral so shoes are a must

This was our second visit to this hotel (the first was Jan 2010). What was the highlight of our previous trip (the food) was probably the lowlight of this visit. Everything really looked and tasted pretty much the same and the same dishes were repeated for lunch and dinner. Even in the snack bar, the food was rather boring. We were disappointed, as it was one of the main reasons for choosing this hotel a second time. The selection of fruit was especially poor this time, with no tropical favourites being available except on one occasion (custard apple and jack fruit).
On a positive note, the in room information was much improved, as well as signage about events around the property. We were actually able to locate and book the pizza restaurant, which was excellent (and an impromptu happy birthday with cake made it extra special).
We had the exact same room as last time, so no complaints!
Beach hawkers are still an issue, and we did not venture out to the sea much. Time of year also meant it was windy and rainy so beware ...

This is the resort I will be dreaming about from my internal office at work back home. I wish I could live there forever.

The resort is spectacular. Never seen a pool so big in my life, and it has a swim up bar. The staff are friendly and attentive and all drinks were available when we wanted them.

The food was fantastic and they catered for my husband's coeliac's disease without any issue.

The only issue was that our room was near the entertainment area and loud music was blasting through the walls until 11pm most nights. This is pretty unacceptable really, especially as so many guests are coming off safaris where they were going to bed early and rising early.

The multitude of the areas of excellence within the hotel more than made up for this for us.

Although this hotel was not the most expensive of the Plan Hotels, I cannot imagine what the others have that this one doesn't. I also not many other reviewers referred to the beach boys. I think you need to decide whether you will allow them to annoy you, or just accept it as part of Zanzibar.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the entertainment area, but close to the beach.
