“Excellent value for money with a few problems”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2006

We spent 3 nights here in late sept 2006 on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal. We paid 70 pounds sterling per room per night and for value for money we couldnt beat it.

The hotel although a bit out of the way has beautiful views. Be careful if arriving during the night since its not that easy to find. Head towards Bettona but dont make the mistake of going into Bettona watch out for the yellow signs for the hotel and follow these for longer than you expect.

We had a great breakfast in the morning with hams, cheeses, bread rolls, cakes cereals etc. We then had a very nice 4 course evening meal each night which was beautifully presented.

The negatives...

The rooms are a bit jaded and dark and need updating - eg the mats werent clean, the bath leaked, the wardrobe door was broken.

The staff are rather brusque and only softened up when we were brusque to them.

The outside areas need to be cleaned more regularly, the plastic tables and chairs had seen better days and the outside ashtrays didnt get cleared during the 3 days we stayed.

The dining room area is used by the family to watch TV whilst the evening meal is being served which is a bit odd.

We got the impression that during peak season its a bit of an upmarket german style holiday camp type of place with a nice restaurant attached

Although we grumpled about the rooms when we arrived we felt that by the end of the stay we had had excellent value for money due mainly to the breakfasts and evening meals.

If they spent some money upgrading the rooms they could easily double the rate we paid.

Outstanding views - look across at Perugia and Assisi. We loved returning to the quiet of this hillside after walking around cities during the day. The restaurant is good, but the menu is not very large. Pool is nice. Interior of rooms OK, but each of them does have outside entrance with patio table and chairs.

The driving instructions on the web site leave out a couple of key things: Coming north from Deruta, you will arrive at a "T" - Go right towards Bettona. Then when you get to a fork in the road, you need to go towards Passagio (right is up the hill to Bettona). We did not understand that Passagio is actually another town, since it is too small to be on most maps. Once you get to Passagio, you can follow the hotel signs up the hill. Plan to arrive in daylight!

We just returned from a 2 week trip to Italy and this was our favorite hotel. It sits on a hill overlooking the hills of Umbria and the town of Assisi. The view is breathtaking. Our room was in a small outbuilding containing 4 rooms, some of which had fireplaces. Our dinner in the main building was superb. The staff of this family run hotel is very welcoming. It was also fun to see the miniature pigs and horses which live on the grounds. This was certainly a wonderful place-I wish that we could have stayed for more than 1 night.

Finding the place is difficult, but signs led us to it. When we checked in the manager, Elena, daughter of the owner was frosty. She gave us a handicapped room with no heat. When we asked for heat, she said it was not the season -- it was unseasonably rainy and cold, finally her kind brother turned it on. At dinner, she was our waitress, and actually glared at us throughout the meal. The food was fabulous, but she was so unwelcoming it gave us an uncomfortable feeling. When we asked for extra towels (being from America) she was really difficult, later charged us 20 Euros for 2 sets of towels. The rooms, an apt, were skimpy, not much in the kitchen, must bring everything to outfit it, if you are not European and bringing everything from a short distance, probably OK. The land is beautiful, but a twisty drive to reach. All in all, I would not recommend this place as hospitality is 80% of one's memory.

We spent two weeks in the Umbrian countryside: two small children, their parents and one set of grandparents. We stayed at the Poggio degli Olivi, an "agriturismo" that was really more like a hotel with apartments. Located high on a hill overlooking the plain between Bettona and Assisi, the views were wonderful. The Poggio has a large, beautiful swimming pool as well as a decent restaurant with a seasonal menu and a lovely jasmine-surrounded outdoor dining area. The rooms are air conditioned, though the apartments are not. The apartments are simply furnished but adequate, with comfortable beds. There are small kitchenettes with a range and small fridge, and basic cooking supplies. The biggest drawback was that the apartments are quite a ways off from the main buldings, down a very steep hill. A car is definitely needed! Also, the Poggio itself is at the top of a long and winding series of roads (thank goodness for the signs to the Poggio, as Mapquest was of no help), about a mile from the town center of Passaggio, where you can find excellent pasticcerie and alimentarie, as well as a couple of bars. It was an excellent central location for touring to Spello, Spoleto, Bevagna, Montefalco, Assisi, Lake Trasimeno and of course, Perugia.
