Owner description: Owner description: Lismore Castle Gardens and Gallery are situated on the edge of the heritage town of Lismore, the proud winner of numerous Tidiest Town awards. Visitors are invited to wander in the historic gardens, arranged over seven acres within the 17th century outer defensive walls of Lismore Castle. The gardens are said to be the oldest continually cultivated gardens in Ireland and they offer spectacular views of both Lismore castle and the surrounding countryside of the Blackwater valley. Featuring a wide variety of beautifully maintained plants and trees, as well as a permanent sculpture collection, Lismore Castle Gardens is one of the highlights of The Waterford Garden Trail, which includes fifteen gardens around Co. Waterford. Please note the castle itself is a private residence and is therefore not open to visitors. Entry to the garden includes access to the contemporary art gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, which hosts exhibitions of Irish and international artists. There is also a small refreshment counter and a reading room, plus art materials available for children. Visitors might also enjoy other attractions located within walking distance of the gardens. These include Lismore Cathedral, the Heritage Centre and Lady Louisa's walk, as well as a number of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. Please note due to the historic nature of the gardens and the naturally steep terrain of the ground, there are some unavoidable limitations on access for visitors who use a wheelchair or are less mobile. The gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, is occasionally closed for installation of temporary exhibitions, please contact us for full details.

Walking the exquisitely kept grounds and gardens of Lismore Castle was a treat. There were so many beautiful places, spaces and gorgeous views to take pictures. The history is deep and interesting.

“A Gardner's Delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

These gardens are a gardener's delight! I visited there on a lovely summer's day, I was lucky with the weather and wandered around the gardens. I was particularly interested in the upper gardens and wanted to see the 17th century layout. I really liked it and was very impressed with all the hard working young people who were planting and working on the vegetable beds, greenhouses and fruit plants there. It was fantastic to walk around and imagine how the garden was in the past as it has been so meticulously preserved. I am a plant lover and I also love history so I was in my element. The staff were very friendly and took the time to chat to us and to answer any of our queries. The arts centre was also attractive and the staff there were very helpful also. We had a pleasant coffee break there before we went into the upper gardens.

“Loved the contrasts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

Went with my Mum & Dad (in their late 70s) to see a particular sculpture with family connections, but was impressed by the gardens. The castle itself is imposing and sets a backdrop to the gardens which are lots of little compartments. You never know what you will find behind a hedge or a wall. The sculptures are mostly very modern but I quite liked that. The gallery had even more modern sculptures and installations. A video of building towers with tyres was quite fun. All in all a good way to spend an hour or two.

“Impressive castle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

The castle is the most impressive part of this site. It is a private residence; too bad some part or parts of it are not open to the public like the Bantry House. The gardens were okay, but in mid-May there were few flowers in bloom or much other in the color category. The upper gardens were a bit difficult to access as the stairs to the area are somewhat steep. We are not much into the modern art area, and modern art was the only exhibit when we were there. The gardens are very peaceful and restful, but the price is a bit high.
