“Relaxing and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

This place is run by a very friendly mother and son team.

They go to great lengths to make you feel comfortable and get the most out of your stay. Norma even drove us around for a tour of the local area in her car one day. They also gave good recommendations for dinner in the town.

They have a sunken trampoline in the garden which the kids adored.
The rooms are cute and comfortable.

There premises is surrounded by fencing and a security system and the rooms have lockable gates internally to the doors onto the veranda - all this could either make you feel reassured and safe or a bit nervous and paranoid depending on how you look at it!

The pool was pleasant enough - a little cool for me but the kids certainly enjoyed it.

Great views from all the bedrooms. We had two little rooms downstairs which were almost adjoining - plus sole use of the downstairs bathroom (not ensuite).

Nice plentiful breakfast served on the veranda each morning with cereals and fruit, as well as freshly cooked bacon, eggs, sausage etc on offer.

This is a guesthouse within a family home, and as such you do feel almost part of the family.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms probably feel a little brighter and have better views as they are unrestricted by the...

Large guest house in mountains above the town which is just off the main motorway from Joburg to southern Kruger. Good mountain views from nice gardens (with a pool in summer). Owner very friendly and keen to please. Good breakfast with lots of fruit. Could get noisy if families staying or fellow guests decide to make use of the large bar. No wifi. Relatively expensive at R890 plus 140 each for dinner. Tip – if you are coming from Joburg you will need to pass the expensive (R64) toll booth at Machadodorp before you reach the turn off so if you are heading north and don't need to stay on the N4 then bear this in mind when comparing costs with accommodation in Dullstroom area.

Room Tip: Downstairs may be quieter as away from the lounge/dining room.

We stayed here on route to Blyde River Canyon and Kruger park. It's great when arriving in Jo'burg in the morning, just a 3 hour drive from the airport.
We stayed in the African Room. The room was very roomy and clean, with great access to the garden. Views are beautiful.
The owner is very nice and does a wonderful job of making you feel at home. Great breakfast and a nice authentic bar. We were also able to eat dinner, but let them know in advance that you'd like to eat dinner. There isn't any restaurant nearby.
We would stay here again!

My husband was spoiling me for my birthday and he couldn't have chosen a better place. Everything was perfect, we arrived as strangers and left as friends. The view from our room was spectacular and the service magnificent. We were spoiled with delicious meals who was prepared for us on very short notice. If you like outdoor adventure but are not prepared to forfeit comfort I can definitely recommend Acra Retreat. Thanks so much Norma and Holger for an unforgettable stay... and see you again soon!

We were looking for a hotel between Krueger National Park and Joburg and came in very late. We had a very friendly welcome and felt as if we were integrated into a family! Holger runs the bar and showed us all the up-to-date South African drinks and his mother takes care of the "catering", cooking a wonderful braai with some family friends. The rooms and the lodge are very spacious and have e fantastic view. The place is very well maintained and clean and I think it is also due to "German standards" applied. ;-)

If you want to be treated like you are the only person in the lodge, then this is the place for you. Each individual is special to Norma, even my 8 year old. The food is just like mom used to make it. The atmosphere is absolutely homely and cosy. I don't think I'll make it through this year without another visit.

We booked this place as we were travelling from J'berg through to Makalali game reserve, so figured this a good half way stop over. It is ideal at approx 2 - 3 hours drive from J'berg airport. You are greeted like family so very friendly and we spent the afternoon relaxing on the terrace with the fantastic views. Norma had kindly offered to do a dinner for us, and it was great, tasty and good portions and again made to feel very comfortable and relaxed. Next morning a huge breakfast, nothing overlooked, every detail covered!! Norma very kindly offered to show us the waterfall nearby and accompanied us which was such a nice gesture and appreciated. Good comfortable atmosphere here, clean spacious room with TV and ideal for en route stop over if going further north into the parks.
