“Really underwhelming”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars is because of the gentleman who checked us in and gave us directions and suggestions for where to go for dinner.
First, the address listed is incorrect--it is #26, not 14. We had to call to find that out when we couldn't find the hotel.
Second, despite repeated contacts with the front desk, our air conditioning in the room never got below 26 C, and was at 28.5 for quite some time. It was 100 degrees outside--we were so uncomfortable, but at 11:00pm we didn't want to have to pack up and change rooms, so we just suffered.
Bed was rock hard--much harder than the normal firm European mattress.
This was the worst place we stayed in Sicily.

“OK for groups; not for independent travellers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

This hotel is very comfortable and has good food, though this is only available at breakfast and in the evening. There is no food or bar service after breakfast until 7.30 pm. Breakfast is good on the days they have groups in but only adequate otherwise. I found the prices very high for Sicily.

As a lone female business traveller I was ushered to the least desirable table as the hotel plainly prioritises the experience of their group clients. Staff on reception are unable to give any help or advise either about other places to eat or about how to travel around. They do not even have copies of the bus timetables or accurate information on where to buy tickets so if you have not got a car I suggest you stay in one of the more central B and Bs so you can be close to the sights and have a choice of places to eat and drink. I loved the location of the old town and enjoyed pottering around the shops, seeing the churches and visiting the beautiful gardens.

Room Tip: A lot of noise from the A/C outlet in 116 but you probably won't be allocated that one if you ar...

“Formerly FRAMON, still good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2011

I was there before when it was a Framon hotel, service was amazing, they did all they could to help me in my stay at the time.
Hotel has remained close to its essence and rooms, breakfast and service remain of a good level.
I was commuting to Gela every day and despite the need to travel, i was always very happy to go back every evening at the hotel. Fresh catch fish was always available to choose from and be grilled on the spot.. together with sicilian cakes :-))
Given the chance, i'd stay there again..

“Good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2008

We stayed at the Villa San Mauro mid August for four nights. I noted that the write up on the hotel website said that this was the hotel to stay in in Caltagirone, can I stress that in our experience this really meant it was the 'only' hotel to stay in as there didn't seem to be anything else around other than B&B's.

Needless to say our experience of the hotel was only good, we had an excellent room (superior) with views up to the village on the hill. There didn't seem to be much staff about, but they were very helpful and would serve you any drinks you wanted (22 euro for two fruit juices - very expensive) on request. There was a very good restaurant down the road (right as you leave the car park, you can walk, it takes about 5 mins), in opposition to the drinks bill in the hotel, you can get a two course meal and wine for about 35 euros, excellent value.

With regards to the town itself, there wasn't much to see really and we were a little disappointed, although the tiled steps are worth a look at. You can't walk to the town, so you really do need a car. With regards to the hotel and facilities, the pool was great and the most people we ever saw around it was about four, so you really do get it to yourself. The breakfast was good and plenty to choose from.

  • Liked — It was very quite
  • Disliked — It was isolated, always had to use the car to go anywhere
