4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We stayed at Dion Palace two years ago and we were not particularly impressed (exept from the breakfast which was great the rooms werec old small and nor particularly clean).

This time we had a very nicely decorated brand new room near the seafront with good quality matress and pillows. Also the room had a small patio with two loungers with sea and pool view. The outdoor areas of the hotel are quite nice with large pools and gardens.

Room Tip: Ask for the new rooms in the seafront.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Last year my family had such a great holiday on Crete, that when it came to choosing our holiday destination this year we immediately set our minds on Greece, however this time on country's continental part. We chose Hotel Dion Palace Resort&Spa 4*, which was proclaimed to be one of the best in Pieria (one of the several regions in Greece), and spent lovely two weeks (14.07.13-27.07.13) there.
The hotel is located near a small city of Litochoro and is quite easy to find if you know where to look for. But to be honest, we had some problems with that. Since Dion Palace has no concrete address and is located a little bit in a middle of nowhere, be ready to get lost and to experience Greeks' famous hospitality and surprisingly good level of English in the meanwhile.
Hotel's territory is quite big, clean, neat and tidy. Dion Palace has 4 pools (three of them are for adults – 1.4 m deep and one is for kids – 0.8 m deep), 4 bars (Main Bar, Pool Bar, Sushi Bar and Beach Bar), 2 tennis courts, sandy beach, a mini-market, a playground and pretty big parking place. The beach is quite big and rather clean, there are enough sunbeds and sunshades (by the way, they are free of charge) for all those who enjoy sunbathing by the sea. However, there aren't enough bins and showers on the beach and to make matters worse there are no toilets at all. The nearest WC was situated in hotel's Greek tavern, near the Pool bar. Frankly speaking, it was quite embarrassing, because every time you wanted to ease your nature, you had to go through the tavern, where dressy people were having their meals. We were informed that a new WC near the beach was going to be opened in two or three days. We waited for this special occasion for 2 weeks, but in vain.
All the problems mentioned just disappeared when we saw the sea. It was really marvelous! The water was warm and so clean that we even noticed tiny fish swimming here and there. Seabed was covered with nice white sand. Families with kids will appreciate the fact that the sea isn't very deep, so their children can have fun, playing both on the shore and in the water.
One of the best things about this hotel is its interior. Dion Palace is not only very modern, but also nicely furnished and decorated. It must have been created with the help of highly-qualified designers. Hotel rooms overlook either the sea or the mountains and to be honest these views are breathtaking. Hotel's reception, bars and main restaurant looked really wonderful, as well as the rooms. Ours was cozy, spacious and very clean, it was equipped with a mini-bar, TV-set, safe and air-conditioning system. The furniture was modern and with no doubts of high quality. All in all, our room contained everything we needed to feel comfortable and was by far one of the best hotel rooms I have stayed at.
Frankly speaking, I am sure that hotel's cuisine is something to be proud of. Everything I tried was delicious. The variety was also quite vast. Whether you enjoy fish, meat or poultry, you will definitely find something to suit your taste. There always were fresh fruits and vegetables on offer. Traditional dishes like mousaka, tzatziki and dolma made us discover Greece's national cuisine and even fall in love with it. And I should definitely mention famous Greek sweets and desserts, which were extremely tasty. However, were the guests so hungry or was the amount of food so small, sometimes I wasn't able to get a tidbit. Waiters did their best to keep an eye on the dishes and bring another portion if necessary, but sometimes you had to wait for a while to get your piece of delicacy. All the drinks were served by the waiters, who were sometimes so busy with cleaning tables and bringing new dishes, that it was almost impossible to order something. By the way, there were only two kinds of tea on offer: green and black. But the most embarrassing thing about that was that the waiters pulled out the teabags right off their pockets. Strange, isn't it? Greece is famous for its incredibly tasty coffee. That we tried in cafes and taverns was really out of this world. Unfortunately, in hotel they serve an awfully-tasting instant coffee, which to my mind is quite a shame. Hotel offers its guests BB, HB and All Inclusive systems. We chose the last one and were a little surprised that it extends only on Main Bar and Pool Bar and doesn't apply to Beach Bar, which was, frankly speaking, a bit uncomfortable.
Greeks are said to be an extremely hospitable nation and the service we received in the hotel convinced us of that. As soon as we arrived we have had the warmest welcome ever, which immediately made us feel at home. Hotel's staff is not only smiling and friendly, but also very well-qualified and helpful. I should definitely mark out the work of our room maid, who was really diligent and affable, as well as the work of hotel's receptionist Dina, who was all politeness, always smiling, being in a good mood and ready to help. The problem we had with our air-conditioner was solved quickly and efficiently. The animation team seemed to be very creative and worked pretty well. They did their best to provide interesting entertainment for both kids and adults. So keeping all this in mind I may in all sincerity say that the hotel's staff made my stay twice more enjoyable.
To my mind, hotel's authorities should definitely renovate their Wi-Fi equipment. Since the hotel is quite big and places numerous visitors, it is sometimes almost impossible to access the Internet.
Dion Palace is a bit detached from all the other hotels in the region, so the only sights available were a small Greek tavern, big camping-site and a supermarket. Therefore, it was somewhat difficult to occupy ourselves in the evenings. If you want to buy souvenirs, visit one of the numerous taverns or even experience the nightlife, go to nearby cities of Litochoro, Plakia, Paralia or Katerini. Dion Palace is located 20 km far from Greece's highest mountain Olympus, so you should definitely go there. On the way to Olympus visit monastery of St. Dionisys and enjoy traditional Greek architecture and iconography technics. If you like mountaineering and want to climb up to the top of Olympus, don't forget to take special equipment. Locals strongly recommend taking warm clothes and convenient footwear, because reaching the mountain's peak may be not that easy. One more place one should definitely visit is Meteora – complex of monasteries, built on inaccessible rocks and mountains. Greeks are so proud of this unique site that they call it world's 8 wonder. The views are really breathtaking and the atmosphere of this holy place is truly incredible. However, a journey may be a little difficult, as it takes few hours to get there (260 km from Litochoro). Moreover, be ready to walk a lot as well as to climb numerous stairs to see the monasteries more closely. But whatever efforts it may take, be sure that it is really worth it.
Keeping all the things mentioned in mind, I may say that I do understand why Dion Palace is a 4* not a 5* hotel. There are several weak points and disadvantages, which should definitely be improved in order to make this hotel perfect. All in all, friendly staff, modern interior, unbelievably beautiful nature and incredibly delicious food make a visit to this place an experience not to be missed.

Totally unacceptable food. Good amenities and pools overall but hotel needs major refurbishment. Hotel doesnt meet what it promises in any instance. Expensive. Stinky rooms and toilets. Dont visit it unless you got a massively good deal

When these kind of prices you should get better. The beach was filthy and that was sad to see. It was decent for one day and then it looked like raw sewage came up on shore. No elevator in the hotel so if you do have luggage, keep that in mind. The worst was that the rooms and hallway smelled like a septic tank and you could not sleep without all the windows open(no screens by the way.) Its unfortunate as the pool area is beautiful and the food, while pricey, was good. This place could be a gem if they had the right management.

The hotel works mostly with Russian tourists and business people, so that who is the hotel caters to, so keep this in mind as well.

The only good thing about the hotel is the activities for children and the fact it is just in front of the beach.

The room is not the standard size of a 4 star hotel. The rooms are not properly maintained the wallpaper peels off and under it there are large patches of mold/mould. The wallpaper comes off the wall. The floor carpet is not properly glued / held and under it you can see the wood and the cement which breaks down. Parts of the cement wall near the balcony door break down.

The reservation manager, Mr. Iani Avramidis, came to discuss with us. He saw the rooms, we showed our complaints and he told us that this is the standard of the hotel.
