Owner description: Hiking (or "tramping" as New Zealanders call it) from one end to the other of this 32-mile track will take days, so if you're time-constrained, pick up a section of it. The view can't be beat as you walk through sandy bays and lagoons, past coves and estuaries.

We did a guided tour from Marahau toTotoranui (a three day hike and four day trip) with Wally Bruce, owner of Abel Tasman Guides. I won't elaborate on the beauty of the hike---others have done that already and I can only say that it is truly magnificent scenery, regardless of weather. However, I do want to give Wally Bruce and Abel Tasman Guides a five-star recommendation. Through email from North America to New Zealand we arranged the perfect trip. We wanted to add on to the usual walk to Totoranui and go on the less traveled trail to Wainui. Unfortunately, the weather turned bad on the last day and we decided to give ourselves a break and only go as far as Totoranui. Wally provided a wealth of information on the flora, fauna, and history of the area as we walked. He made all the arrangements for meals and wonderful accommodations so that we only had to carry what we needed for the day plus his excellent lunches. A special treat was having a cup of hot tea or coffee at a beach stop---Wally carried the water, a small camp stove, and real coffee with a coffee press! Such luxury! Throughout the trip, Wally was always looking to meet our needs--the pace of the walk etc. He is a very knowledgeable and experienced guide and a great companion on the trip. He does guided as well as unguided trips where he can arrange for your accommodations and transfers as well as recommended times for tidal crossings (important!) for those who prefer to walk on their own. He even contracts to have your overnight bag delivered to each night's stop via the Aquataxi. If you are planning a trip to New Zealand, the Abel Tasman walk is a must and we highly recommend contacting Wally Bruce at Abel Tasman Guides.

“Great part of the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

Spent a week there based in Kaiteri. Went Wake Boarding when the water was flat and did several sections of the track on foot. Great views all the way along. Pulled in to most of the bays and had many a BBQ in some awesome spots. The water is a bit colder than where I'm from but fine with a Spring Suit. Would definitely go back. One of my favourite parts of NZ!

“Excellent in spite of some nasty weather”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

We had a guide for the day and walked about 8 miles. Having a guide is not required - the trek is not difficult (as long as you are not barefoot or wearing sandals as we saw some poor souls) - but his knowledge of flora and other tidbits made it an enjoyable day.

The boat trip out in the AM was reminiscent of riding crew boats in the US Gulf of Mexico - rough waters that pounded the boat (a number of folks got sick). We started the walk in the rain, got some sun, then a shower, and finally a few hours of bright sun.The trip back was on a mirror calm sea.

Much scenery to take in and hikes that most anyone can tackle.

“Lovely subtropical forest walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

Well marked and easy to walk route. Regular stopping off points in the bays with camping and toilet facilities. Beach fabulous. North of Awaroa you need to plan the time for crossing the estuary as it can only be done at low tide. Plenty of kayaking available too if you want to give your legs a rest

“Nice experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2014

I did this walk with my boyfriend starting from Marahau. It was a nice one, really easy and for everyone. Is even possible to do just a day walk in the National Park. What I would recommend is to walk the part from Marahau to Torrent Bay: is the best one!

The water and the sand are exactly the same as the pictures, I know that is hard to believe until you get there and you see it with your eyes!

Do it and enjoy stunning views!
