Owner description: Hiking (or "tramping" as New Zealanders call it) from one end to the other of this 32-mile track will take days, so if you're time-constrained, pick up a section of it. The view can't be beat as you walk through sandy bays and lagoons, past coves and estuaries.

“Absolutely Perfect Christmas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2012

Went out on the 5 day 4 night trip with Wilsons and while pricey was a much greater value than our Milford Track experience. Our guide Whitey was awesome (dolphin as...), and the accommodations and food were exceptional. Trips out were lots of fun, with hiking across the mud flats, kayaking up the estuaries, body surfing down the natural rock slide at Cleopatras Pool, swimming with the eels, hiking the track or sea kayaking by the seal colonies, this is pure magic!

“Pleasant, easy hike with some great scenery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2012

We purchased a three day pass from Wilsons, and walked bits of the track over three days.

It rained all of the first day, but apart from struggling to keep the camera dry, it didn't really matter; the second day it was slushy underfoot but the third day was superb.

Day 1 we walked from Tonga Bay to Medlands; day 2 from Medlands to Anchorage and day three from Anchorage to Coquille.

Was it because the weather was so good that we enjoyed the third day the most? Possibly;but if I were to pick a single day route I'd go with that

Cautions..if it is wet it is incredibly slushy so you will need if not boots at least trainers. On a fine day sandals are just fine.
Don't go without insect repellant! The sand flies drive you crazy , especially at Medlands.

Take a cold beverage and enjoy it on the beach while waiting for your water transport back at the end of your walk.

We did find we were the only ones who were back three days in a row, but the trail is packed. lots of Europeans, not just kiwis and Aussies. Suitable really for all ages and really you don't have to be super fit for this.

The track is well laid out, I'd suggest it's virtually impossible to get lost and there are plenty of wow moments along the way.

We didn't kayak but it looked like fun on the fine days. When the sea is rough, it didn't look like much fun at all.

“Fantastic walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2012

I loved the views of the sea, and the exercise. Lots of up and down, average 7-11 ks per walk. Water taxis (which operate like buses) drop you off at your destination and you walk to where you want and the water taxi takes you back.

“Do it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012

I have kayaked the AB a number of times so decided to walk it for a change. The track (except where washed out from recent extreme weather events is very well maintained). We meet a number of tourists who had not walked it because they didn't have boots etc, depending on how far you can walk in a day/ what you want to do don't let that put you off.make use of the water taxis so you can walk one way only (and get a "free" seal tour before you get dropped off) or if you do stay in overnight cheat and get your packs dropped in ($15 each) to save carrying them. On our last day we walked Bark Bay to Awaroa (without packs) 18 to 20 km in about 6 hours with breaks via the high tide track. You can cover a fair distance in a day .Just study the tides well when doing your planning and take heaps of insect repellant and sunscreen.

“Wonderful walk, a real must-do if visiting New Zealand.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2011

Well laid out and maintained. Good, informative sign posting. Even toilets! Superb scenery, beautiful sandy beaches in little coves. Choice of walking in one direction and getting water taxi or kayaking back again, walking on and staying in huts (need to prebook accommodation) or just turning round when you've had enough. Level, easy walking, although would recommend trainers especially if visiting beaches as climbs down to them can be a bit rocky in places.
