5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2011

During our three weeks vacations this cozy 6 ****** Hotel was together with the
Whare kea Lodge simply the best. Charming host is always taking care of you. Dr. Lee is taking care of your health concerns; his wife drives the stay to an unforgettable event.
Great place et to relax and to start excursions

Gorgeous, unfortunately we have not seen something like this in Europe.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!
Dr. Holger R. and Karin R. from Heidelberg

Without question the most compelling stay we have had anywhere around the world. The absolute pinnacle of refined luxury, personal service, and privacy in a truly contemplative setting, with a pristine natural setting that unfolds before your eyes. Every conceivable luxury service and detail is at your disposal, not the least of which is the extraordinary food which Lee and Pen prepare, not only to tantalize your taste buds, but also with your health in mind. Lee is also a knowledgable doctor, who specializes in wellness. This is a sanctuary of peace, relaxation and serenity. Come prepared to be amazed

I needed to get away and have a break with my husband... I had read about Split Apple and decided that this was the prefect place to unwind. Boy did we make the right decision..... Set right on the border of the Abel Tasman National Park with sweeping views over the sea, it is truly breath taking... I was in heaven.... The cusiine was amazing based on healthly, fresh local ingredients and did we feel better after our couple of days of total R&R and eating well - Pen is a gem in the kitchen. Beach walks, piece and quiet, movie room, swimming, sauna and massages made up the few days we were there. It was true bliss we cant wait to go back for our wedding anniversary in March.

My husband and I were blown away by every aspect of Split Apple Retreat. Host Lee Nelson searched NZ for years to find the perfect location, and it's absolutely sublime. You look out across the most beautiful bay to picture postcard views of tiny uninhabited islands, the cute town of Motueka and Abel Tasman National Park. Even on the chilliest NZ days, the retreat was bathed in sunlight. Lee is a retired US doctor who's passionate about 'functional foods' and the impact they can have on longevity. If you're interested (and we certainly were) he'll explain why some foods are better than others, and the benefits that certain 'superfoods' can offer to mind and body. His gorgeous wife Pen is a great chef who creates amazing meals with the ingredients as you're learning about them. We came home feeling really inspired about eating better and (hopefully) living longer as a result. The bedroom suites are divine and very private (we came home with plans to buy the exact same bed) and the whole place is adorned with incredible Asian artworks collected by Lee over three decades. The best thing, though, was that everything was so relaxed. Nothing is 'shoved down your throat' - you can relax in the cinema room, hike in the national park, explore the nearby Nelson wine and art region or exercise in the gym before relaxing in the sauna and spa. I know I've used heaps of gushing superlatives but I totally guarantee this place. It's brilliant.

The first thing that you notice when you step off the plane in Nelson is the crisp, clean air. It is wonderfully refreshing to a city dweller.

On arrival at the retreat, you find that you are in a place where East meets West, and the traditional blending with the modern. Wi-fi internet access is available throughout the house - very important for a wired person like me. It is a magnificent three-level building with a very strong Zen influence. It is tastefully filled with authentic Asian art pieces, mostly Japanese. It is opulent without being ostentatious.

The retreat is a fantastic place to reflect and rejuvenate. It is well-secluded and everything is so quiet, especially at night. Soaking in the large hot Japanese tub in the still of the night, listening to Bach and looking out to the ocean, is a meditative experience not to be missed.

Lee and Pen were wonderful hosts, and the meals, personally prepared by Pen, were a culinary delight. And being able to experience and learn about a healthy approach to living from Lee was an added bonus.

My whole stay was a fantastic experience - it is difficult to express the sense of peace and level of relaxation that one feels there. I certainly felt very at peace and recharged after my stay. It is certainly at the top of my list for places that I would visit again. Actually, I think I want a home just like it.

Split Apple was an extra-ordinary experience.
It has just 3 (or 4) totally stunning rooms, astonishing location, breathtaking views and the very best food and service we have ever enjoyed.
It's run by a husband a wife team - he an American doctor who is committed to the view that our lives can be immeasurably improved, and we can live longer and better, with the right focus on what we eat and drink - she, a fun Thai lady who is an extraordinary culinary artist, cooking only the freshest of seasonal foods.
One evening, just a sunset, we all climbed down to the beach and dug for pipi's (the small clams) which we then had at mealtimes the next day.
The days were spent walking the adjacent pristine national park, sailing the protected waters or fishing and the nights often watching movies in the 10 person theatre.
But what changed our lives was that we'd accepted the invitation of Dr Lee Nelson (yes - the famous poker player and poker author) to bring along a range of recent blood tests. He studied these and then, individually and carefully, he worked through what these showed in a way that we'd never seen before, explaining that, as a whole, these tests revealed how our bodies were functioning and what strengths and weaknesses they revealed. He then talked each of us through what could be done to improve the ways our bodies were functioning; what elements could be boosted and what needed some help. This meeting changed each of our lives - my wife in gaining an incredibly positive insight into just how strong her key indicators were; me in seeing just what I needed to do to improve my chances of living a longer and better life. The result is that, just 5 months later, I have lost weight and significantly improved key readings such as LDL cholesterol and blood pressure.
So we had a brilliant 6 nights, in an idyllic location (we were in the Japanese suite) and gained some life-changing insights.
What a wonderful experience.
