Stayed in 6 bed dorm. Tiny and dark. Bunks creaked and swayed with slight movements. Foam mattresses. Huts themselves shuddered with any heavy footsteps. Loud sliding doors. No flyscreens, despite abundant sandflies. Need to walk outside and down gravel driveway to get to bathrooms. I got about 2 hrs sleep and I'm not a fussy sleeper.
Host gave very tetchy negative vibes, and every encounter seemed annoy her somehow. Really not what you want on your special holiday to Abel Tasman. I tried to be compassionate - perhaps she just had a dreadful headache? But now I read other reviews and others have experienced this. I wonder if she understands what an impact her rudeness has on her guests.
Location was not ideal. A twisty drive to any of the area's main attractions. Setting not ugly, but grounds are basic, and forest/views not especially beautiful unlike almost every other place I stayed in NZ.
Need to go for a drive if you want mobile or wifi reception. Wifi available from hosts if you pay $5/day. Local calls free in office.
Kitchen/dining hut small but clean. Showers' water pressure is fantastic!
Carparking is tight. Watch for dints!
