Owner description: Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The coastal resort of Seaton is now a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the historic town of Colyton is described as "Devon's Most Rebellious Town" for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.The company originated at the Lancaster Electrical Company of Barnet, which manufactured battery electric vehicles. In 1949 its owner, Claude Lane, indulged his hobby by building a miniature 15” gauge tram, which he ran at garden fetes. This portable system enjoyed temporary homes at St Leonard’s and Rhyl before evolving onto the 2’ gauge Eastbourne Tramway. Many of the present trams were built at Eastbourne, but by the mid 1960’s the tramway’s success was outgrowing the mile line. Claude therefore began to look for alternative locations. In late 1969, Claude purchased the Seaton to Colyton section after the branchline had been closed by Dr Beeching in 1966 and, after a mammoth relocation from Eastbourne, the first section was opened in 1980. Since then the tramway has developed into one of Devon’s best loved attractions.New trams have been added to the fleet and the buildings have been much improved in order to meet the needs of the thousands of enthusiastic people who visit each year.

“very nice relaxing day out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

I thought this was excellent, as well as the trams being very interesting, this is a lovely relaxing way of spending a morning or afternoon or you can ride all day for £9.00. It was a nice warm sunny afternoon when we visited and we rode on the top deck to the end of the line at colyton where we took a stroll into the village and had a bit of lunch in one of the pubs before taking the return journey to seaton. AAHHHH Bliss.

“A SUPERB DAY OUT FOR ALL AGES”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Had a great family day out for my neices 35th birthaday alongwith her husband and 3 children , my mother and my partner .
I am a loyalty card holder so have been on the tram ride on numerous occassions and never get tired of it as there is so much to see on the estuary.

I can offer fellow tripadvisors a few tips.......but dont tell everyone !

If you can , travel from Coyton station to Seaton . There are a few parking spaces at Colyton and there is no charge. The station itself has a good gift shop , a superb cafe and plenty of seating in and out. There is also a small play ares for the kids. The cafe can supply a nice breakfast to start the day off or a selection of lunch fare.

The trip itself takes approx 30mins and the focus is along the estuary and its abundance of wildlife. The drivers will stop along the route to inform of a little local history and places to visit.
The company has special events over the season including tribute bands , special bird watching trams , and theme days. Also you can have a tram driving experience which makes for a nice gift for a special occassion.

Relax and unwind on this friendly , well run railway.
