nice place, friendly staff. Need more people to take orders at the bar at peak times, far too slow and annoying. Also, meat overlooked and girl serving used her hand and fingers to cut and serve meat! Quite frankly disgusting and not hygienically acceptable!

I very recently had my wedding at the South Causey hotel and I have to say it was excellent. Its a charming country pub/ hotel. All of my guests were impressed at the venue and there we definitely no complaints about the food.
We had been talking about getting married for a while and came to the South Causey just to have a look on the wednesday nights they have it set up for weddings. Once we went into the ceremony room we knew this was the place we wanted to get married and booked it that night! At every meeting we had to arrange details of the wedding the staff were very reassuring and knowledgable. I rang the hotel many times for little enquiries and no problem we too small and kept me calm through the whole process.
The South Causey is a family ran pub/hotel and this gives a great friendly atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable and the food is excellent. At previous weddings I have attended it very rare there arent any complaints especially with all food being hot when it is served to many poeple but this definitely was not the case here. All the guests commented on how beautiful the food was. The presentation, portion size and overall flavours were great! We could also have 3 different options for the menu which you cant always get at other venues, which kept all guests happy.
The large room on the eveniung reception was beautiful. the candle lit room with fairy lights and folliage around the room was gorgeous. everyone was very impressed. the DJ was very good too we gave him a playlist and any requests were met with no problems. people were up dancing all night.
Our hotel room was lovely we recieved a complimentary stay for the bride and groom and also a voucher for a 1st anniversary stay too! The bathroom especially was lovely with a large jacuzzi bath and a tv in bathroom you couldnt ask for more! The organic bath products and soap were a lovely added touch. The superking size bed was enormous and really comfortable. the breakfast the next day was lush too.
Id just like to say a massive thank you to all the staff especially Steph, Katy and Susan! without them I dont think the day would have been as special and relaxing considering how stressful weddings can get!
Thbanks again!!

Room Tip: The superior rooms are lovely if you want to pay a bit extra.

We have been regular visitors to the bar and restaurant for a couple of years now and have usually been very happy and content, however we also know what the competition provides and there are a good few establishments within a couple of miles with which we are also familiar.
Now, the food is consistently good, and fairly priced so you should not generally be disappointed. The service also is usually efficient.
An earlier reviewer remarked on what was previously a unique menu item, the "tapas". This was a taster of three wines or ales together with pâté, chorizo cheese chutney and bread. It's been changed to something resembling a poor ploughmans. We mentioned it to the waitress, not sure if our comment was isolated though. The menu is generally comprehensive and the quality very good as stated earlier.
The main gripe though are the bar prices - £3.50 a pint for average ales: too much! and these merely average beers are changed about weekly. Stick to a few good beers and keep the quality high and review the costs. Wine? £5.00 for a medium sized glass of rosé; not good value. There are breweries close by selling better beer in their bars, at 70p less and other gastro establishments offering food of similar quality. There is too much competition around and when we want a pint and a wine next week we will go elsewhere.

We decided to pay the Causey Arch another visit today. One of our favourite restaurants which we know we can rely on for a lovely warm welcome and a vast choice of options. We all decided to have a sandwich/burgers and we know we shouldn't be surprised at the portion sizes but we were, yet again.Sorry couldn't eat it all even though it was delicious. I opted for a crab with lemon mayo, which came with 2 giant prawns, hummus dip, massive home made chips and salad, very very nice.

Thanks again for a lovely lunch :)

My husband and I are both profoundly deaf and the staff at this hotel did everything to make us very welcome and nothing was a bother to them for anything we asked plus ringing for a taxi to Beamish where we attended our friend's wedding..
When we arrived on 6/10/12 we were welcomed by hens running around in the courtyard which was a lovely sight to see and also there was a stable where horses were kept which you could hire to ride.
Our room was no 15 a lovely double standard room overlooking the countryside with a bath & shower. We had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent and the staff very friendly.
There is a coffee shop which we didn't use and they even have Archery, Air Rifle Shooting and Clay Pigeon Shooting..
Next morning we had breakfast which was fab and you could choose anything from orange juice.cereals, fruit, to full English breakfast, the only thing the room could have been a bit warmer as it was a cold morning.
Overall a fabulous hotel to stay and we would go back any time and a credit to all staff there.

Room Tip: Our room was no 15 which has a lovely view of the countryside

I love this place and I go regularly as it is my favourite pub in the area. The food is fantastic quality and you certainly get enough of it. Once you've finished your mail, if you're not too full and decide to get a desert you won't be disappointed! The chocolate torte and Turkish delight ice cream is to die for!

I feel that some of the adverse comments here about excessively large portions are a bit rich to be honest. There would be even more comment if portions were small!
We stayed for two nights taking breakfast and dinner on both days, yes portions were generous, but after the South Causey's beatifully cooked and presented full English breakfast, my wife and I were not snacking for the rest of the day, in fact we didn't eat again until dinner. On the first evening we selected from the menu and starters and mains were of excellent quality with very good service. On our second evening my wife selected pork from the carvery and I did likewise with the ham. the meat was a little dry, but perfectly edible and full of flavour. Veg and other accompaniments are held in a Bain Marie with lids on the containers, which can make things a little soggy, but if they held them open under hot lamps they would dry out. You takes your chances with carveries. Overall we both enjoyed our carvery meals.
From the reception to the bar and restaurant, the staff are friendly, engaging and efficient, and nothing is too much trouble. At the table staff are attentive without being overbearing and the restaurant manager monitors procedings to ensure smooth service.
Our room was clean, tidy, cosy and well appointed but bloody hell, the bed was hard. I suffer from back pain so I may be over critical, but they do need to look at making their mattresses a tad more friendly. The only real down side of our stay was the disco noise on our second night belting out from a Thursday evening wedding party bash. I'm not anti a good knees up, but if we had known it was going to happen we might not have gone to bed early in order to get fresh for a long drive the following day. That said, the music did stop at twenty to twelve, I managed to drop off but my wife was awake throughout.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the South Causey Inn, I've docked one star because of the disco noise causing us to lose sleep, but we would stay there again
