“Fantastic Night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

New to this site after searching the net for somewhere to stay for our next little weekend away.

My partner and I regularly travel around the UK on weekend trips, and have got to say after finding the Oak Tree in in Tantobie we were delighted.

We arrived mid afternoon and were shown straight to our room which was located uptairs in the main building. Our first impressions were on how clean and fresh the accommodation was, including all toiletries, towels, spotless bedding, flat screen tv/dvd (freeview included), wi-fi access and the usual tea/coffee/kettle etc.

After dropping our bags off we went for a drink in the bar, and have got to say were entertained by the locals with friendly banter ranging from our differing accent to football results/transfers to even attending the leek show when it is on!

After a couple of drinks we were advised that there was a party on in the bar that night to celebrate the landlord (Tim) and landlady (Sue) getting married. We decided to head out for a quick bite to eat locally and after a shower and change secured a table in the bar area to see what the night would unfold.

What a laugh. Great locals, great hospitality, good ale and was still smiling the next morning! Albeit the paracetamol helped!

Breakfast was served on the dot at 7.30 as promised by Sue and was more than filling (how she managed I do not know!)

After reading the reviews on this site I was disappointed/confused to read certain reviews as some comments posted certainly do not relate to our experience, and the numorous other reviews of other visitors. Especially as they appear to be the same night as we stayed!

Myself and my partner will definitely be visiting the Oak Tree again (maybe for the Leek Show!) in the not so distant future. I would certainly recommend this friendly, clean and humourous establishment for anyone who, like us, enjoys short breaks away.

Myself and my partner live in Scotland and are regular visitors to the north east. We have stayed here many times and have never been disappointed. The accommodation is absolutely spotless and every room we have stayed in has been lovely. Sue and Tim work tirelessly to ensure you have a lovely stay, they are really welcoming and go out of their way to look after you. Both myself and my partner cannot fault the food, home cooking at its best!!.We invited some friends from Scotland to join us on one of our stays and they thought it was excellent too and a good time was had by all. The locals in the pub are very welcoming and friendly making this a great place to stay and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the Oak Tree ,it is worth every penny and we can't fault it.

My daughter & I stayed here in June while we were on a driving holiday around Britain. We didn't want to be tied to an itinerary so had a hotel & inn freedom pass & we were booking hotels as we went 1 or 2 days in advance. When we arrived at the Oak Tree Inn we were shown to our room which was upstairs where we discovered the shower & toilet were in one corner of the room with what looked like a cupboard built around them & the carpet on the floor hadn't even been replaced with tiles or something waterproof. Not only that but the toilet wouldn't flush properly. When we went down to the bar to get something for dinner we were told sorry but there was a private function on that night & there was no food. The closest restaurant was another pub about 2 miles away. If it wasn't so late in the day & we'd already given them our voucher I would have gone somewhere else. Needless to say we left first thing the next morning without breakfast... we couldn't get out of the place quick enough. The hotels on the pass were supposed to be 3 star minimum but this place would have been lucky to get 1 star. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone as it was undoubtedly the worst place I've ever stayed.

We (2 couples)stopped at the Oak tree inn for 2 nights in Sept 2012 after looking for accomodation near Beamish.
We were shown to our room which was a seperate building to the pub and we were pleasantly suprised at the cleanliness and size of the accomodation.
The other couple were equally satisfied with the room they got which was in the pub.
We met in the pub after unpacking and decided to give the food a try.Huge portions, cheap and very tasty. The entertainment on the first night we stayed was a pyjama party in aid of help for heroes and we were that comfortable with the friendliness of the locals that we made a short trip to the local superstore to buy some appropriate attire for the evening, needless to say we had an absolute ball and met some incredible characters that made us feel so welcome.Well done Joe and Sandy and keep up the fundraising.Breakfast was also very ample and nothing was too much trouble for the hosts Sue and Tim.
Beamish was a 10 minute drive away from the Oak tree inn which was one of the reasons we booked it.
We Spent both our free nights at the pub because of the food, hospitality, and entertainment.
Well done to a hard working Sue and Tim and thanks for a memorable weekend.
I'm sure we will be stopping at the Oak tree again if we visit the Durham area..
Bob and Manda..

Room Tip: The outside accomodation will be quieter

stayed at the oak tree inn on sat 27th jan 2012 me the wife and another couple , and what a lovely experience it was . old style bar which is exactly what i like ( superb atmosphere )and large lounge which is joined to bar in an l shape.we were shown straight up to our rooms by the landlady despite the bar being very busy. the room we had was exellent , four poster bed which we dident expect , spacious room and en suite bathroom all spotlessy clean. the ale was spot on and the land lord kept us entertained with his witty banter, also there was a very good singer on ( carnt remember her name ) but the evening seemed to fly over.after a good nights sleep we were served with one the best full english s i,v ever had. so all in all a very enjoyable experiance and thanks to sue and tim for making us very welcome.

We only stayed for one night but found this Inn to be very friendly, good value with an excellent breakfast!!
There are some lovely old features in this old Victorian Manor House. Our rooms were lovely too!!
I would definitely recommend this old INN to stay if you are visiting the area. There are some lovely views and scenery right on your door step and plenty of places of interest within a very short drive away.

We had booked a twin and a double room, and both were very nice.
See pics attached.

i stayed at the oak tree in whilst i was visiting family over the festivities, and have to say i left there feeling that my family was now extended.

the couple who run the inn, were some of the most warm and welcoming people i've met who were truly genuine and made my stay a very enjoyable one!!

the rooms are quaint clean and make you want to wish you were staying longer, the features within the pub are warming and oozeeee character.

we will be visiting again

Room Tip: the granny annex is delightful
