“Cozy English Traditional Pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

Stayed at the Strathmore Arms with 3 friends booking all 3 bedrooms for 1 night.

The owners are new and have a brought a new lease of life to the place.

Rooms were good, the food was nice and Anthony and Selena were very welcoming. If you are a pool lover then there is also a great pool room as well.

Overall an excellent stay.

Good luck to anothong & Selena with building the business up - a great start I would say.

I have twice been to this pub.
The last time I arrived was with a group of eight very wet muddy walkers.
We couldn't have been made more welcome.
Lovely fire. Carrot cake and tea and coffee appeared as if by magic as well as the normal pub drinks.
One of the best pubs I've been to recently.

Had a lovely couple of nights here in Spring, midweek. Plenty to see within walking distance, and lots of wildlife (human & otherwise). Pleasant pub and warm welcome; good choice of beers. Wish the new Owners lots of success in the Summer; we'll be using the answers & skills from the pub's Quiz Night at our local village club tonight, but bet/hope we don't sweep the board there!

Room Tip: 4 rooms upstairs; two face front/north, two face to sides - views from all. All are located directl...

Stayed nearby for a few days and visited several times.

This is a lovely example of a Traditional English Pub being run by a great dedicated couple. We were made so welcome by the owners and the locals it was a joy to visit.

The food is simple but good and generous portions - the cheese board is a must with a great selection of cheeses. Well kept beers and a lovely atmosphere, also they are very dog friendly.

We will be back in the near future and hope to stay at the pub next time.

We called at the pub at lunch time on our walk, and enjoyed a pint outside in the garden, and we took the opportunity to book for an evening meal, as it was Saturday.

The menu isn't extensive, but everything is home cooked and very tasty. The couple (newly relocated from Derby) who own the pub were welcoming and the atmosphere was warm and friendly.

If you tried this pub some years ago, give it another go - on our previous visit it had some VERY blue comedians - its a very different ambience now. Its neatly placed just outside Middleton in Teesdale - turn right after the cattle market out of the village. The road ends at the 'village' of Holwick, so you won't be passing it as you drive around the area.

The do Sunday lunches, but nothing on Sunday evenings - be warned, as we were planning to go back the next day! They do also offer accommodation.

Its a traditional English pub; they are getting few and far between!

We have just stayed the week in a holiday cottage in the village of Holwick. The pub is 100 yards down hill and on arrival we quickly unpacked and strolled down. Whst a delight! We were welcomed with a big open wire and an old fashioned pub, unspoiled and original. Anthony and Selina the hosts were welcoming and helpful and within an hour we felt like locals..and by the end of the week we felt like we had been visiting friends. We visited the pub regularly during the week and the food was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble, Nicely presented, hot and was exactly as described, good honest pub food and all
freshly cooked. The Sunday lunch (we had a pork and a beef) were extremely tasty.Proper veg and quality meat.
We took our dog Jess in and she was made extremely welcome (and fell in love with their dog Bailey). The locals are very friendly and chatty and we really felt at home. The location is stunning,.... views to die for and walks across the fells and by the river are beautiful.
Anthony keeps a good range of ales and spirits. We intend to stay in one of their b and b rooms soon, ....cant wait to try the breakfast if the bar food is anything to go by.!!!!!!!!!!
A lovely couple in a lovely pub.....
Thanks to both of you, you made our holiday very special.

We have travelled over to this region many times before and found the pub closed during the daytime. This time however it was nice to see it was open and under new tenants.I popped into the pub to be welcomed by a blazing fire and a very friendly landlord and his wife.Having consumed a couple of pints of Golden Plover I pre booked sunday lunch for the following day.We arrived a little earlier than we had booked the following day so settled by the fire till our lunch was ready. Our meals were served up in a small dining area adjacent to the bar which we found very cosy. Our food was outstanding to say the least i ordered a lamb shank with all the accompaning vegtables, the lamb was cooked to prefection and the veg was delightful my wife and siblin ordered the beef which has of an equal high standard.Extra gravy was supplied at the start of the meal without having to be requested and there was a great variery of condiments. We also returned to the pub later in the week to sample an evening meal yet again I was not dissapointed the steak I ordered was cooked just as requested with homemade chips (which makes a nice change from those tasteless frozen ones often served in pubs these days) my son ordered a chicken kiev and commented that it was probabily the best he had ever tasted. I will return in the summer.
