This is the worst experiance I have ever had in a hotel, it promised so much and delivered so little.

The stay was spoilt by the standard of rooms, not nice and cheaply decorated, paint peeling off.

The terrible food at the hotel ( certainly trying to be somthing its not) followed by terrible food at the local pub ( same chef apparently)

The service was non existant ( not bad or rude, just not their) We attempted to buy a drink in the lounge on two nights and have breakfast two mornings and failed in both these endevours because there appeared to be no staff. However they did appear miraculously as we were checking out to hand us a bill.

Seems to me the price charged is not indicitive of the quality of product received.

A friend and I decided we needed to escape the christmas 'hurly burly' for one night. We stumbled upon this hidden gem when searching through one of those last min web sites. Little gem it was ,from checking in to check out we felt so at home. No stuffy staff here nothing is a bother. We were shown to our ground floor room(I have recently ruptured my achilles tendon and find stairs a problem). we had our own front door into the hotel with an internal door straight into the dinning room.
The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard we could find no fault at all here.(not that we were looking for faults mind you!) . We settled ourselves in front of a roaring fire read newspapers and had afternoom tea. We were told by our lovely hotess that they had ran out of scones but if i was prepared to wait chef would put a fresh batch in! you just wouldn't get this kind of service in some faceless hotel chain. I might add they were warm and served with what looked like home made jam.
we then availed ourselves of the leisure facilities. Now don't be expecting 5* because it's not.The pool looks like it has been included in the refurb but the sauna ,gym and changing rooms are quite basic. Maybe these are next on the list for an update? Having said that it was still quite quaint and didn't deflect from our high opinion of this place.
The food...........oh my god!every dish was presented beautifully and tasted better than anything I have tasted before.(nearly a"Harry met Sally moment" it was so good) The staff were unobtrusive I have to say the best meal I have ever been served. I have eaten in the White Room at Seaham hall which has 1 michellin star and this food 'knocked that into a cocked hat'.
Plan to revisit Burythorpe House early in the new year and could not praise this hotel enough no the wonder it won the Yorkshire Life small and friendly award . This will not be it's last award of that I am sure.

Stayed at Burythorpe house on the 1st Nov for my partner’s birthday. The room (Rievaulx) was traditional, spacious and very clean. The staff were very friendly and down to earth. The food was absolutely fantastic and surpassed my expectation, being better than some Michelin star restaurants we have ate at. Only the day before we stayed in a 4 star, Burythorpe House was a much nicer experience altogether. My suggestion would be to book soon as i believe when the accolades start coming for the hotel it will be much harder to guarantee a room.

My wife and I stayed at Burythorpe House for 1 night as a treat for our 15th anniversary. I chose one of the luxury rooms (Jervaulx) on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
The hotel is not easy to find (I would recommend a satnav) but worth it once you arrive. From the outside the building is impressive.
You sign in to a guest register (a nice touch) and the staff are very polite and attentive. I had requested a bottle of chilled champagne and a bouquet of flowers to be placed in the room and they were waiting for us on arrival.
The room was superb - our first reaction on opening the door was wow! The bed was huge and comfortable. The decor was wonderful and the bathroom made you want to stay in there for hours.
Dinner was some of the best tasting food I have ever experienced. The menu is small but of excellent quality. Complemented by a quality bottle of Austrailian Shiraz it was a delightful evening.
All the staff were faultless from arrival to departure. They were there when you needed them which was almost never. The waitresses at dinner were especially lovely.
My only regret was that I didn't get to enjoy the leisure facilities, which for a small hotel are very well equipped. I intended using the gym and pool before breakfast on Sunday morning but the bed was so comfortable I could not seem to get out of it.
This hotel was a luxury treat but worth every penny and I would have no hesitation in recommending it highly.

We spent a blissful night in this hotel.

In the Kirkham suite which was both modern and cosy.

The dinner, bed and breakfast deal we had was excellent value.

The restaurant food was out of this world.

The staff were very pleasant and we will definitely go back!!
