It was a couple of years ago that we first visited the Railway. At that time it was one of those pubs that offered rock-bottom prices for pensioners' lunches. I was strongly reminded of lunchtime in the NAAFI of an army camp.
What a difference now! All the very amateurish steam engine murals are painted over. The room is now light and calm, and the food is a world away from what it was- that is to say, it is very good.
We have been there twice in the last few months. The first time in the evening as a couple, when we ate from the A la carte menu (with the bonus of a 25% off voucher from the Chronical). That meal was well up to the standard of a good restaurant, and one of the best we have had in the area. I was really delighted by the fact that when I ordered the Toffee Apple Pie as my dessert, the waitress came back to say that they had run out, but that they had some ordinary apple pie, and that the chef would make me some caramel sauce for it if I wished. I did, he did, and it was delicious.
On the second visit, we had arranged a group booking for a Christmas lunch, and the whole group of nine were very impresssed by the food and the service. There was one of our group (who was having a bit of a grumpy day) who though that the roast beef could have been cut a little thicker and a little less gristly, but apart from that it was excellent.
We have recommended the place to all our friends, and have no hesitation in recommending it to other traveller.
