Upon arriving at the Sun Inn we were a bit surprised as it is located across the road from a huge disused viaduct which has a car repair and MOT test facility underneath it, and this is the view from all but the most expensive room. Our room had a very comfortable bed but had nowhere else to sit apart from a window seat and an artistic chair made out of driftwood, neither of which were conducive to sitting comfortably. The main problems were in the bathroom with a shower which was not temperature adjustable and an extractor fan that could only be switched on by standing on the side of the bath. Although being located on the road the traffic noise was not particularly intrusive. However, we were located above the exit from the restaurant, which consisted of two doors, one at each end of a corridor, which closed with an annoying thump (the two shoes syndrome). The night we stayed, there were people chatting in the restaurant below and exiting and entering until the early hours. However, the room was very well equipped with refreshments and toiletries and was perfectly clean.
There is nowhere in this hotel where one can relax and read a newspaper or book. It is also uncomfortable standing at the bar to have a drink as all available space is taken up by dining tables and chairs.
The staff we came into contact with were all extremely friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was having a 'Guinea Pig' night where they were trying out potential additions to the menu and where one had to eat what was presented, and then score the food afterwards. We were told about this when we booked the room and happily went along with it. The evening was fun and the food was varied and delicious. There is no doubt that the Sun Inn deserves its reputation for good dining.
The Sun Inn revolves around its restaurant; it is not a pub and is wanting as a hotel. Having said that, if I were in the area again I would definitely eat in the restaurant, and probably stay overnight for the convenience.
Silence the doors, sort out the glitches in the bathroom, and replace the trendy chair with something more comfortable and this hotel would rate as good rather than average.
