We returned from The Portsonachan Hotel yesterday and I thought I should write a review whilst the feelings are still fresh. Where do I start? What a beautiful hotel in such stunning surroundings. This was our second visit and we were really looking forward to it and weren’t disappointed. The staff were absolutely fantastic, every one of them, and nothing was too much trouble. They deserve a medal for all their efforts - Darwyn (Duty Manager), if you’re reading this, you made our trip so memorable and we hope to see you again the next time we stay, you’re an absolute diamond.
The family room we stayed in (McLean) was very clean and comfortable with superb views over the loch and mountains beyond. The quality and quantity of food was first class, especially the breakfasts - service quick, friendly and efficient.
The hotel is in a remote location and you do need to drive to see the other attractions Scotland has to offer, but it is in quite a central location with Invarary and Oban only a short drive away. If you wish to totally relax some of the time or even all of the time, then this is definitely the place to be, especially in the lounge with it’s open log fire (if it’s not lit, ask one of the staff and they will gladly “attempt to” light it for you, as I said, nothing is too much trouble).
We had only one day of rain during our five day stay and took the opportunity to visit the hydro power station (Cruachan “The Hollow Mountain”) around the other side of the lock - well worth the visit in my opinion.
Places to eat (other than the hotel of course) - “The George” in Invarary is much bigger than you think from the outside and the bar meals are very good and reasonably priced. It has an abundance of rooms with log fires scattered about and children are very welcome. It’s good also if you just want to go out for a drink, natter and a change of scenery.
“The Loch Fyne Oyster Bar” at Ardkinglas near Invarary is a must for anyone who loves their seafood, not the cheapest of places to eat, but the food and the experience are well worth it.
As you have probably guessed, we really enjoyed our stay and I hope this review has been helpful. I have read some of the negative comments e.g. some make out that the road past the hotel is like the M1! I drove down the length of this single track road from the hotel to Ford (about 20 miles) and passed three cars along the way! Many people stay on a reduced price voucher, we paid full price and were highly delighted. We will be back…..
